Merlin and Mordred swap bodies after they both said that they wished to have someone else´s life to improve one´s own, the universe knows that they need the help of the other to achieve it, so here they are.
At the end they have a brother-like relationship and Arthur pulls his head out of his ass.
This is based on another fanfic that is really good, as soon as I find it again I will put the name here.

“Lord Geoffrey,” Arthur sighs, rubbing a hand along his brow in frustration. “We’ve talked about this. I am not, at this point, interested in marriage.”
Geoffrey looks over at him then, lips pinched and eyebrows high on his forehead. “No sire. I shouldn’t think you would be the right person for this, anyways. Forgive me for saying so, but I hardly think there’s a magical being in all of Albion that would happily marry you, the son of Uther Pendragon.”
Arthur flushes in anger and embarrassment, despite how he privately agrees with Geoffrey. It shouldn’t bother him so much, really— after all, he intends to marry for love. Still, the claim that no being of magic could ever love him stings for a reason he can’t quite pin.
“No, I was thinking marrying off your Court Sorcerer might be a more effective strategy for gaining magical allies.” Arthur chokes on his own spit.
Camelot has legalized magic, but needs a magical political marriage to seal the deal. Merlin gets courted. Arthur pines, stresses, and pines some more.

Never in his royal tutelage was he told what to do when slimy, slithering men insinuate that he seeks company that isn’t his husband. Why did no one think to prepare him for this?
“Your silence betrays your guilt, Pendragon,” Rodreck grins, and then raises his hands in placation. “Don’t worry, we certainly won’t tell. It’s only natural to have a few sweet things tucked away. A squire here, a stableboy there, a handful of whores when the mood calls for it.”
And finally, Arthur has had enough.

In which Arthur has to sit through yet another feast when he would rather be with Merlin, only this one is made much worse when his guests begin asking questions about his consort, and then about his loyalty to said consort. What follows after the feast is a collapse onto the bed as Arthur spends the rest of his night in Merlin’s arms.

This, of course, results in all the leaders of Albion beginning their attempts to win the elusive Emrys’ favor, in order to be chosen as his prophesied King.
Even as his Court Sorcerer, Merlin lives to antagonize Arthur and decides to inform the world -as Emrys- that he has already chosen his King, in a... less-than-conventional way. -
