Grian and Scar are soulbound and Grian is more than angry at the game for pairing them together. Scar’s not stupid. He knows Grian wishes they weren’t soulmates. His partner hates him for something neither of them had any control over. Back in 3rd Life, they were close. Scar has never felt so far away from Grian in Double Life.
Joel and Etho are paired. It's platonic, with both of their hearts longing for past lovers. With Lizzie not in this round, Joel is left with Etho, a man who's upset that Bdubs isn't his soulmate. They make the most of it anyway. Having recently turned red they have the courage to ask questions others haven't:
Would Scar feel it if Grian's wings were damaged?
Joel and Etho are curious, wanting to find out. The "participants", however, aren't exactly interested in getting any results. Scar knows how precious Grian's wings are and doesn't want his soulmate hurt. Grian doesn’t really like the idea of having his wings experimented on for a silly question.

Grian’s heart is a complicated thing, and so are his relationships. The threat of Ren or Scar discovering him and his affair with BigB? Terrifying and thrilling. The fighting with Scar over his disappearance, not so much fun. Nor is it rewarding. One would think Scar would get the message of Grian's disinterest by the lack of communication. But Scar is nothing if not persistent.
Joel makes a visit to our favourite little bird and has a couple harmless questions. Respectful ones that don't go over Grian's boundaries at all. Very wholesome and caring requests about his wings and what were to happen if someone hurt those fragile things. Just some experiments that would be beneficial.
Completely normal questions anyone on red would ask! If only Grian would participate in testing those theories. Afterall, Etho and Scar were just discussing this topic. Though, Scar didn't seem too interested in participating either.

Ren has been quietly fuming since he discovered the cheating. Wanting revenge for his broken heart. Upon running into Grian, Ren gave him a note to give to Scar. The paper was blank, yet Scar had an interesting reaction. He did tell Grian that Ren had an offer that he declined... wonder what that was about?

In the story of the Red Names & Love Games (RN&LG) series:
Etho is jealous of Scar being soulmates with the love of his life, Grian. Upset that he wasn't paired with his love from the previous game, Last Life, to Bdubs. Having Joel as his soulbound is nice but Joel is still loyal to Lizzie, even if she's not present this round. Leaving Etho very lonely. Being on red, Etho visits Bdubs in hopes of rekindling their relationship. Seeing as he only has one life remaining and wants to spend it with the man he he truly wants to be with. However it doesn't go well. As Bdubs is happy with Impulse. Wonder why Etho agreed to Joel's plan to test the phantom limb theory? Curious how Etho handles the rejection from Bdubs due to his link with someone else?

Being with BigB is refreshing. Being with Scar is suffocating. Grian knows it's only a matter of time before people find out about the affair. That's the least of his worries. Going home, he runs into Scar who is elated they're finally in the same place. When his partner asks him for lunch, Grian declines. Much to Scar's disappointment. He doesn’t take it well. Not at all.
Grian hiding from others isn't nearly as scary as his soulbound.

Jimmy overhears a fight at The Red Velvet Keep. Unable to stop himself from listening in on the conversation, he learns one of the two residents is cheating on the other. With lives and souls being linked this round it's hard to believe anyone would do something so heartless. Especially since their history is well known to be ‘romantic’. But the blame game becomes heated. As Scar and Grian argue, Jimmy isn't sure who it is:
Scar, like Tango, BigB and Grian seem to be accusing.

Grian, who Pearl, Bdubs, and Scott point to.

Just before Scar goes to collect wood and Grian to work on their base in the meantime, the two of them argue. Grian points out that Scar also keeps his secrets. How a couple nights prior, he felt hands roam all over him, like he was having sex with a ghost. Scar didn't explain when Grian had questioned him the next morning. Unbeknownst to them, a certain unlucky someone was eavesdropping.

Their deaths are painful. In isolation, far from each other. Grian dies underground in a dark cave that should have been a tunnel. Scar's body rests by his noble stead on a hill under the moonlight.
Scar, still upset with Grian's hypocrisy, hopes that he'll have better teammates this time. He opens his eyes to a circle of friends & future foes. Like every game starts.. But Grian's reading of the rules haven't changed. A familiar invisible string pulls him across the opening of the woods. Right where he died last night.
