‘You should cut back on the amount of sugar you put in your tea, you know. It's not good for your health.’ He glanced at his plate before raising an eyebrow at her. ‘This is different. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. What if you start feeling ravenous during all your important work things?’
He chuckled. ‘Then I might – God forbid – have to have a snack!’ he said, mock horror lining his voice. She just rolled her eyes at him as she sat down opposite him to scroll on her phone. Still such a teenager. ‘Are you sure you don’t want a little something to eat, sweetheart?’
‘You know I can’t. I always get full so fast.’ She blushed and looked back down at her phone.
Trying to escape, was she? ‘I know, sweetheart, but today is going to be a long day. You saw daddy’s schedule in our shared calendar, right? There’ll barely be any time for breaks.’ He paused chewing some bacon, and hummed in thought. ‘I don’t want you to start feeling ravenous during your very important task,’ he finished with a teasing note in his voice.

Her eyes flicked up to his. Then down to her lap. Then back up. She licked her lips, and after a few moments of silence, she spoke. ‘Actually, I was thinking of something a little different. But I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable if you don’t want to. I totally get it.’
He frowned. ‘What is it, love?’
She fidgeted some more. ‘I… I want to change our relationship.’
Now it was his turn to stare. ‘Change our relationship? To what?’
Her eyes darted around the room before landing back on him. ‘To a different one. One that’s more than father and daughter.’ She said it like she was talking about one of her veterinary procedures and not changing his life.
Saying he was shocked was an understatement. He has a good relationship with Roisin and had always been there for her when she needed him, but he had also made sure to respect the distance she maintained with him. But now she was saying… what? That she wanted to further their relationship?

‘Wait, we need to talk about last night. I know you came home drunk.’ Aaron stepped forward and reached out a hand to grab him. ‘Nick, I’m worried about you!’
‘Don’t wait up, dad!’ Nick chuckled as he sprinted out of his reach and headed straight towards the front door, slamming it as he left.
Aaron looked down at the mess that Nick left on the counter, the apple core just sitting there. He grabbed the bottle of surface cleaner and sprayed it on the sticky fruit juice.
So, Nick was just going to ignore him.
He tossed the apple core into the bin.
Nick wanted to act like his actions didn’t have consequences.
He wiped the counter with a paper towel before tossing it in the bin as well.
Fine. If that’s how it was going to be, then there was no reason for Aaron to hold back either.
He stood there, staring at the area he had just cleaned.
It was time for Nick to learn the hard way.
