Summary
Fifteen years later, Jim would struggle to remember the details of the confrontation. Only that he felt very strongly about it, and that he decided that he couldn't spend another minute in this house. That he needed to get away from the life they wanted him to live, going to school and living in Riverside Iowa. The upshot of it was that he packed a backpack, told his parents they wouldn’t see him anytime soon, and drove his early model beater hover car into the sunset with a sense of self righteous, furious triumph.
Jim turns 17 and leaves home, ready to be out on his own! This is a post Tarsus IV, Pre TOS era fic! This one started as a way to explore why Jim was willing to chase down Finnegan after his best friend had been speared through the chest. And I think we get a satisfactory answer here. Jim has some teenage space adventures, settles down for some (mostly) good times in a bordello, and then after a traumatic transition back to Earth, begins his time at the Academy. He runs into many of the cast of TOS.
