He sits. He stands. He paces. He sprints out of the hospital like it’s on fire and gulps in the sharp relief of the chill December air until his face is too numb to feel tears rolling down it. (He’s not crying. He can’t cry. He’s too numb, but the wind drags moisture from his eyes like claws snatching it from him.)
For some time — minutes, hours, he doesn’t know and doesn’t fucking care — that is all Kenji does. Stuck in a loop, neverending. Time doesn’t carry on. Not without a ticking of a clock, that metronomic certainty Kenji used to loathe. Not without a heartbeat. Not without his heartbeat.

But with Ben, it felt... different. Platonic affection doesn’t make his skin burn, and his heart flutter, and his stomach twist into knots. Platonic affection doesn’t fill him with a weird sensation that feels like standing on the edge of a cliff looking down at the dizzying depths below — and Kenji has to acknowledge that.

Kenji is slow and careful, wriggling the fabric off one arm, then the other, before tossing it on the floor behind him. Ben suddenly feels very exposed. The warm air turns cold, as if his skin was scraped off and glistening flesh was left in its wake. His wound dressing conceals what Ben knows to be an ugly, twisted scar.
Yet the way Kenji looks at him, like Ben has the body of a warrior... if he were so bold, he would call the look admiring. But he isn’t bold. He isn’t brave. He’s scared.
He’s so fucking scared.

After his injury, Kenji helps Ben shower.

Kenji’s heart has been crawling up his throat since Ben invited him on a picnic. “Just us two,” Ben said lightly, like those words didn’t kick Kenji’s heart up to the start line of the racetrack between his ribcage, and his loose–cannon mouth. Confessing the long–brewing feelings Kenji’s done his best to ignore since Italy seems inevitable, like a ticking time bomb in the corner of the bedroom they share now— and Kenji can only blush at Ben's every touch, and listen to the time bomb beeping, slightly faster, every night.

In which Kenji grapples with feelings that are getting harder and harder to ignore, and the sunset just makes Ben look beautiful.

Kenji is on stage, the crowd buzzing at his feet, yet all he wants is to sneak a glance at Ben behind his shoulder. Gorgeous, perfect Ben, the mid-afternoon sun outlining his slightly crooked nose as he adjusts the dials on his drumkit. Kenji’s sure those little parts have a name, but he can’t think for the life of him what they are. Ben probably told him, and Kenji was probably too busy staring at his insultingly cute little face to have paid attention.

The camp fam are performing at their local food festival, and Ben and Kenji join in to keep their minds off their recent... disaster. But the longer they wait, and the longer their feelings brew, the more they threaten to boil over. And God, Kenji just looks stunning on stage in the sunlight.

“One hundred percent?”
“And not a percentage number thingamajig less,” Kenji says with too much confidence.
“Then get out of bed. Right now.”
“Seriously?”
“As a heart attack.” Ben gives a grim smile. “Now get out of bed, and prove that you’re fine.”

Ben has to take care of a (very) stubborn Kenji when he's sick. Disaster ensues.

They’re out on a pretty ordinary picnic, absent-mindedly eating sandwiches (and Kenji downing a protein shake), when it happens. The mountains gnaw at the horizon, and the sun is crawling to bed beneath the soft, grey clouds. Ben slips an arm around Kenji’s shoulders, and Kenji instinctively nestles his head into Ben’s chest, listening to the sound of his heartbeat.
And it's from there, Kenji’s safest place in the world, that Ben asks a question that changes his life forever.
“Do you wanna get married?”
And before Kenji can stop himself, he’s blurting, “No.”
