And so, on the first day after the winter break in his fourth year, after witnessing his brother avert his gaze when their eyes met, - his last hopes for a relationship crumbling to ashes, being taken by the winds and sinking to the bottom of the Great Lake - Regulus writes his first letter.
The new quill shakes in his grip, fresh ink seeping into the parchment, the steel nib harsh against the paper. The words flow out naturally, just like the tears from his eyes and Regulus doesn't think he has ever been more grateful for the silencing charms he has over his bed.
When he's done and the page is full, Regulus realises the words rhyme and laughs.
Laughs because he never meant to convey his words in verses and yet the letter sounds just like a poem.or:
Regulus Black writes letters from the winter break of his fourth year to the day he dies. He never intends to send them.
Except, maybe, just maybe, he survives and tell Sirius everything on his own.

Everyone in the Wizarding World knew.
But he didn’t really.

Regulus survived the cave, but he woke up in a wizarding hospital in South France with no recollection of anything in the past 4 years. The only thing he could remember was something was missing. Someone was missing. Someone was so incredibly important to him that he didn’t feel whole without them.
And as his memory comes back with the help of memory recovery potions, he realises what he has to do.

Summary
James has been in love with Lily since first year, but he’s not all that good at expressing it. In a desperate attempt to win her over, he recruits his best friend’s younger brother to write a love letter.
Regulus has been in love with James since his first year, and he plans to never show him. Unfortunately, Regulus has never been very good at saying no to James. Especially when James is the only one who can get him a muggle record player.
In other words: Regulus makes a stupid decision and James starts to fall in love with him.
