Summary
A brief look into Armand's manipulative tendencies and abandonment issues as he reminisces falling for Daniel, keeping Louis none the wiser.
At first, the stalking was motivated purely out of venomous resentment. Charm the boy, sleep with him, torture him, eventually kill him when he was no longer interesting. Punish Louis as he had done to him. But as Armand followed Daniel night after night, city after city, his malevolence transformed into pure obsession. He was enraptured by the reckless mortal who had forgotten his name, his face, and was enchanted by him even through his cruelty; this sentiment proved to be mutual after a few years when he finally let the boy drink his blood. His sacred blood that seldom crossed the lips of another, yet hung now from a vial on the mortal boy’s neck.

Armand gifts Daniel an amulet containing his preternatural blood, a protective charm for his beautiful mortal boy.
Turning his boy would prove catastrophic.
His alluring humanity, his naïvety - all of that would dissipate with his descent into a damned existence. But even more so, and Armand would not even admit this to himself: if Armand were to transform Daniel into what he was, he was destined to despise him. To desert him. All fledglings end up hating their maker: he abandoned his own after years of abuse (which was not the first time his maker had been left by a former fledgling or unwilling lover) and Louis murdered Lestat with the help of their late daughter. The bond between maker and fledgling is always impenetrable at first, shepherding the bloodless into an obsession for some time, but it always metamorphoses into antipathy. The subsequent, inevitable abandonment after such a spellbinding love was not something he ever wanted, not with Daniel. He wanted to keep him. The boy was his.

As if rooted in a trance, Armand stared forward and listened to his lover’s voice on the cheap hissing cassette tape, trying to tune out the whimpering, shuddering boy behind him.
“Rest.” The boy fell silent.
All of it, blather - yet unequivocally passionate, open. A passion that Louis had never graced before him out loud or even in passing thought. The venom of irascibility and bellicosity coated each word he spoke, yes, but it was still curiously vulnerable. Twenty-three years together and he still was not allowed the role of a companion. He knew that their love was built on a bed of lies, but in utter defiance of that fact, he was astonished to once again learn that he was second best. Substandard. Discarded. Abandoned. Too boring, lacking even a modicum of fascination to be loved.

Taken his bag and left, gone somewhere else, perhaps back to America and the remains of his mortal life? There was no note, nothing about needing to go and talk to mortal agents or return back swiftly. Nothing that indicated that their tryst had come to a swift end, other than…
Perhaps Armand had pushed their activities a little enthusiastically and he’d been falling asleep or taking a variety of substances to artificially energize himself. There had been more discontent lately, more drinking, more experimentation with substances in a way that suggested it was not necessarily for pleasure or energy but for escapism.
Daniel is missing from the flat and Armand has a minor crisis about it.
