And even then that soon fell apart, his already limited contact with his friends reducing more and more until they stopped talking entirely.
If people didn’t want to talk to him then why make them? And why make himself go through an interaction with another person if he gains nothing either?
Shuichi was not stupid. He knew when to quit.
After their initial conversation, Shuichi didn’t think anything would come from Kokichi’s offer to hang out. Burnt out and barely above water academically, he planned on keeping to his own when that didn’t have to be the case anymore.

Before he can even decide whether to follow them or stay put and watch, a couple who were rushing in to join the dance suddenly bump into him, making him lose his footing.
He takes a step back trying to regain his balance, but a warm hand presses on his back to steady him before he (embarrassingly) crashes into whoever is behind him.
"Ah, sorry!" Shuichi turns with a jolt, surprised by the touch. His eyes meet murky green ones before averting in embarrassment.
"That's alright," the person chuckles as he steps back, scanning if he’s alright before relaxing and dropping his arms back to his side. "People sure are festive tonight, huh?"
"It—sure is," Shuichi stutters.

Summary
Shuichi hated nights when he just could not get out of his head. He would have the most amazing day, spending time with the people who cared about him, who made him feel loved and appreciated, only to go home and tear every interaction he had to shreds.
The moment he had any time alone with his thoughts, he would spiral into such a low that he sometimes convinced himself that he would be doing everyone around him a favor if he never spoke to them again. But he was working on it; he was trying his hardest to get out of the episodes he often found himself in on nights like this. Maybe that motivation is what got him up and out of bed, off to the kitchenette in the common room of the dorms.
Whatever the reason, he was grateful he did.

Shuichi hated nights like these, where he finally had the free time he always yearned for, yet found himself faced with a different symptom of his array of mental illnesses.
He was stressed out when he couldn’t seem to keep on top of his work. Frazzled by his ADHD that made it practically impossible to focus, yet anxious that he wouldn’t get what he was working on done in time. He was so plagued by his social anxiety that any outing with his friends led to hours of overthinking after; tearing apart every little thing he said that day and overanalyzing every little expression and tone shift in any of the conversations he was involved in.
And yet, when he finally had peace, with no work to stress over and no interactions to overthink, he found himself spacing out. It wouldn’t be a bad thing, really, if he wasn’t unable to come back.

Why did it all have to be so complicated? He could barely look Kaito in the eye now and every time he did he remembered the glimpses he’d had of the life he couldn’t have. The dreams kept coming back to haunt him. His conscious brain knew that he didn’t really want that but his heart didn’t seem to agree.
