Summary
The cactus ring scene from 3rd life.
After the Battle of the Red Desert, Scar and Grian are left as the sole two survivors. In order for the series to conclude, one of them must die. After Grian passes up an opportunity to consentually slay Scar and take the win, the two set up a ring of cactus on the desert's hilltop beside the ruins of their keep.

His hands were slick with blood, the axe now impossibly heavy in his grip, dripping with viscera. His stomach churned violently as the metallic taste of bile crept up his throat. The coppery smell of blood clung to him, thick and suffocating.

Summary
The sun seems to rise earlier in the desert.
Logically thinking, it probably has something to do with the colour of the sand, muted cream almost to the point of being white, and how easily it reflects the light. Grian has always risen with the sun, waking just as the first rays spill over the horizon, not moving but tracking her ascent with his eyes. Scar sleeps soundly for the few hours it takes the darkness to fade into oranges and pinks, and then further to the azure blue of the near-constant clear sky of the desert. Once Grian can take his eyes off the journey of the sun, he finds himself watching the rise and fall of Scar’s chest, an unknown emotion broiling deep in his gut.

Love was, simply put, like a flower.
First sight was the planting of a seed, the first conversation covering the seed with soil and the awkward laughter and smiles that came the sunlight and water the seed needed to begin to grow. With time and care, roots would anchor the seed into the ground - and the person into a heart. The seed would grow into a stem, would blossom into a flower, would fill the world with colour, beauty, joy. Love did the same for anyone that felt it. Love brought feelings of warmth, safety and security - things desperately needed in a world as cold and harsh as this.
