it was all Ruby could think as she ran, ran as fast as she could, ran away from her other half across Dulcington and towards whatever fresh hell awaited her at Castle Candy.
She felt as the locket of the sweetest heart grew colder and colder against her chest and finally faded away to just a plain old metal heart, mocking her, taunting her. It was no longer full of the life and vibrance of her other half, reassurance always with her, the sense that she was never alone.
She was alone and she was running and Jet was dead
She made it back to Castle Candy to a scene of chaos. Her father, emerging from a crater where he had landed, fallen from the ramparts, a blur of fire as he went, miraculously alive. Cumulous helping him. And there, emerging from a hidden tunnel -

It's been about a year since the reclamation Castle Candy. Since then, Amethar and Caramelinda have been instated as Emperor and Empress, Saccharina is the Queen of Candia, and all of Calorum is kind of a mess. But the leaders are coming together to sign a new and improved Concord, a good step in the direction of fixing all the messes made at the Grand Tournament.
Until an attack in Comida leaves Saccharina on the ground and Ruby unresponsive, and they all realize Ruby pushed Saccharina out of the way. Why would she do that?

Ruby understood her family's relief. It had been a spectacular run through the city. There was a world where she was exhilarated, where she understood the value of her life and her place in it, where she could go into the ship’s hold and lie down grateful, exhausted, anything. But in all of those worlds, Ruby had someone next to her to share it all with.
In this world, she was numb. There was something unimaginably dark hovering around the edges of her vision and she kept it at bay by shaking off her father’s arms, climbing up to the mast so she wouldn’t have to face comfort or quiet or her own dreams. In some of his more vulnerable moments, Amethar had confessed that it was sometimes tempting to escape into them. In dreams, he’d told her, he often saw his sisters. But then he had to wake up and realize they were gone, and Ruby wasn’t sure she could survive that. Not again.
So she stared into the eternal darkness of the sky, and she felt herself wishing, even beyond hope as she was: Bring her back. Give me more time. I know you can.
(ruby rocks is stuck in a time loop, reliving the worst day of her life over and over again. but hey, at least she's there with her sister, right?)
