The silence that follows is unbearable.

Essek begins counting.

Essek watches Caleb’s chest rise and fall and feels the night expand around them, vast and patient.
This is not the vigil he prepared.
This is something else.On the longest night of the year, Essek plans a quiet surprise: a Zemni Long Night Vigil, researched and arranged down to the last candlewick. Caleb comes home late, as he always does - just not under his own power.
With an artifact’s hungry remnants still tangled in Caleb’s magic, healing becomes dangerous, and the only thing left to do is keep watch until morning.

Why didn’t you say anything!” Nott yelped, pressing the back of her hand to his forehead, “Caleb, CALEB!” Nott was still assaulting him with concern, trying to shake him for his attention, but he wasn’t lucid enough to translate the various noises into words. Or stay awake, for that matter, as he remembered nothing after that, until he came to consciousness in a foreign room, in a foreign bed, with a cold rag on his head.
“Do you know what happened to you? Back on the journey? I can’t imagine it was anything pleasant.” The wizard repressed a laugh at Caduceus' more than obvious observation.
“No… no I– I don’t. Know, that is. Nothing like that has happened since–” The blood abruptly drained from his face as he felt panic settle into his chest. No, that. It couldn’t be. He had taken his suppressants, hadn’t he?
