Summary
She thinks about the idea of family, which once seemed like everything.
A long time ago Helena promised that she would never let her sister go.
But it was easy to promise that, with her arms full of shuddering Sarah-weight, with Sarah’s heart thumping a firm counterpoint to her own. It is a difficult promise to keep with no Sarah at all, nothing but ghosts.

Summary
Still, you press your fingers to your lips and pretend that they are Sarah’s. You pretend that she has let you get close enough to rest your fingers gentle trembling on her beautiful face. Like when your fingers were a knife against her lips, except she isn’t afraid, in your head. She understands, in your head, that you want to know exactly how her lips would move around the words so that you can say them like her, so you can be like her, so you can be as good as her.

Summary
Or: Helena on a plane.
“Peanuts?” she asks, voice high.
You stare at her. Your grin shrinks back, your mouth forms a puzzled pout. What about peanuts?
“Yes, I’ll take some,” says the woman next to you. She is no longer shaking, but leaning a little towards the woman in the aisle. You think about this as the nice-dressed woman hands your companion several bright packets. Oh! Oh.
“Yes,” you blurt, your eyes wide. Is she going to take them away, because you didn’t ask quickly enough? “Yes, I will take some peanuts.” The woman nods. There is a plate on her chest that shines bright and says Jane. Jane, Jane, Jane. She piles many shiny packets into her arms and looks at you. You look back, almost vibrating. Peanuts!
