“Have you been living under a rock? Every sportscaster has been pitting us against each other for the last six months. The MLH said we were the top rookies to watch for. ESPN called us the next Hollander and Rozanov!” His voice takes a hysterical edge. “Kogane, they drafted us into the two teams that hate each other the most in the Eastern Division!”
Kogane frowns. “You really care about that stuff?”
Lance’s eyes are threatening to bulge out of their sockets from sheer disbelief. “Dude,” he says, feeling permanent wrinkles etch themselves into his forehead, his extensive, retinol-based skincare routine be damned. “You’ve been my arch-rival this whole time and you hadn’t noticed?”
“We’re not rivals,” Kogane says stubbornly. “We shared a water bottle.”

“You’re not an angel,” he slurred. The not-angel let out a huff of laughter.
“Yeah, no. Can you move? Why are you even in the middle of the desert?” This not-angel was rather pushy, Lance decided. He needed to learn his manners. Would it kill him to say ‘please?’
“Go ‘way,” he mumbled petulantly.
“C’mon, I can’t leave you half-dead on the side of the road,” the not-angel pleaded, a hint of frustration slipping into his voice. "Work with me here.”
Lance squinted at him. Slowly, his night vision improved, and the outline of his savior began to take shape.

“Hey,” Lance says, keeping his tone light. “Uh… I think you’re in my seat.”
Keith has a hood up and one earbud in, dark hair sticking out in soft curls that graze the edge of his jaw. Leaning back in his chair, he keeps his eyes closed, distinctly choosing not to notice Lance.
“Hey,” Lance tries again, tapping the corner of the desk. “McClain. That’s me. You’re in my spot.”
This time, Keith glances up barely. Then he closes back his eyes, as if Lance never existed.
Lance stares at him, momentarily stunned. Did this dude just ignore me?
Ask Keith, and he’ll say it only took one unforgettable night with Lance to know it was love at first sight.
