“You have but to speak the names of the thieves.”
...
“I accept.” Her decision is instant. There is little else that she thinks of. She buries the faces of her friends -- no, were they even friends? The thieves she had traveled with more aptly describe them.
This is her third -- but unfortunately, not her final -- mistake.
Alternate universe where Ellie decides makes good on King Garion's proposal to become a Goldwing in exchange for the names of the three thieves. The kingdoms kind of still need to be saved, though, so as Ellie learns to be one of the king's many steadfast, ruthless killers, Nox, Gussie, and Twig will have to figure something out on their own.

Summary
The words on the file are vague, and large, and complicated — just like the way his father talks.
(“Oh, but I can’t take all the credit. Your father,” the Hunter says, “played a much bigger part in all my plays.”)
Corion can see the words clearly. At least — he can read them, but he reads them over and over and over again, trying to make sense of the words.
(“I should have gone through with the plan a while ago,” the king mutters when he thinks Corion can’t hear.)
Corion’s stomach drops.
(“Your Majesty?” asks Zain. “Are you good?”)
He’s snapped out of it by the sound of footsteps in the halls. Loud footsteps, dignified footsteps — his father’s footsteps.
His father, who — according to the detailed document Corion holds in his hands, the jumble of plans and backup plans and every minute carefully considered — is planning Corion’s assassination this Saturday.
