A few minutes later, Lucas said what was on his mind. "I'm so glad to be spending time with you here," he said softly, voice slightly muffled against Nick's sweater.
He knew something was wrong when he felt Nick stiffen, and Nick suddenly leaping away a split second later with eyes wide in alarm confirmed it.
"Where are my manners!" Nick gasped before Lucas was able to ask what was wrong. "I invited you here and I haven't properly welcomed you at all!" He quickly ushered Lucas to one of the couches and practically pushed him on it. "There! Just relax while I get something sorted. You are my guest, after all. I insist." With that, he kissed Lucas's cheek. "I'll be right back," he said softly before speeding off.

Toby had promised himself once they had defeated Obscurio that he would tell Jessica how he felt about her, because after Supreme Luminos's death, he realised life was too short for things to be left unsaid. He wanted to clear the air about whatever this was he and Jessica had before it was too late, but with Gorm at peace, he didn't really feel that pressure of saying anything to her.
And since there was no imminent threat to deal with, it was a lot easier for him to keep chickening out.
But because of his pride, he wanted to stick to his original promise of telling her before summer break ended and today was the last day of doing so, and he knew he couldn't put it off or chicken out any longer.
No pressure, huh?

Meeting Toby in the kitchen, Nick and Lucas stood with open mouths on either side of him as they looked at the devastation in the frying pan, and Toby shifted uncomfortably as he couldn't help feeling a bit of defensiveness over the situation he found himself in.
After an uncomfortably long period of staring into the frying pan, Nick finally turned to look at Toby.
"What did you say you were trying to make again?" Nick asked gently, sounding more curious than accusatory.
Toby met his brother's gaze. "Pancakes," he replied evenly.
"And what did you end up making?" Nick continued in the same gentle voice.
Toby risked another glance at the sludge in the frying pan, then grimaced. "...Poison?"

A sudden tapping noise interrupted Lucas, and all Lucas felt was panic as he huddled closer into Nick. "What was that?"
Nick, who had tensed from the noise, squinted his eyes as he tried to inspect their surroundings.
As Nick searched for whatever was in the darkness, Lucas listened carefully for the sound of more noises, but the realisation that he couldn't hear any more noises — be it the same noises or different noises — made him feel the opposite of calm.

"You're right," Lucas agreed. "I'll help you out as much as I can. You can count on me to be there for you."
At this, Nick felt guilty. Toby's explanation was still fresh in his mind, and all he could think about was the fact that he wasn't there for Lucas earlier the way he should have been. Toby had told them all that Lucas had immediately walked up to him once Lucas believed that he and Jessica were cured, and because of Lucas's faith and belief in him, he ended up being the very reason Lucas was no longer himself anymore.
Love — something that usually made them stronger together in Gorm and earth — became Lucas's weakness in that moment, and Nick felt terrible for putting Lucas through that.
He didn't want to imagine what Lucas's final thoughts were before he became bewitched, but his brain wouldn't shut up about how heartbroken and betrayed Lucas must have felt, and that honestly broke his own heart.

It's up to us to get them to face their feelings." Lucas didn't look entirely convinced, so Nick decided to explain his other reason for the plan. "Besides, this would also count as payback for the number of times Toby pranked us. Give him a taste of his own medicine, you know?"
Lucas chuckled. "Well, when you put it like that..."
"So does this mean you'll help me with this?" Nick asked.
Lucas nodded. "Definitely. How can I help?"

It didn't matter that Lucas was terrified to confess to Nick. As Nick said, having the courage to do it despite his terror is what really counts, and although every instinct was screaming at him to just leave it be and to not say or do anything he would soon regret, Lucas knew it was time for him to be brave.
After all, if he could help save Gorm on a regular basis, then he could do this, too. All he needed to do was ask Nick if they could go somewhere to talk privately, and then tell him from there.
