Summary
“What if... I’m not good enough... for you... Or as the Ultimate Life Form?”
Shadow had never expressed such uncertainty or sadness before. It was almost unbelievable to Maria. She had never seen this kind of reaction before, and was sure that none of the scientists had either. The hedgehog hesitated, looking away from her, and in that quiet gesture, Maria knew something profound... He trusted her... more than anyone...
Her heart swelled. She truly did love him.
Maria hugged him once more. With how surprisingly light Shadow was, she was easily able to fall onto the bed beside him.
“Shadow, you are special. You’re going to do amazing things on Earth. You are going to help so many people who need you. You just have to trust me. And if you don’t believe me... believe in the science, okay?”
Shadow needed to hear this. He didn’t know why he had doubted himself when the results were clear, but the events from earlier had shaken him more than he realized.
"... I know we just became best friends, but I... love you, Shadow.”
