She had never seen this kind of reaction before, and was sure that none of the scientists had either. The hedgehog hesitated, looking away from her, and in that quiet gesture, Maria knew something profound... He trusted her... more than anyone...
Her heart swelled. She truly did love him.
Maria hugged him once more. With how surprisingly light Shadow was, she was easily able to fall onto the bed beside him.
“Shadow, you are special. You’re going to do amazing things on Earth. You are going to help so many people who need you. You just have to trust me. And if you don’t believe me... believe in the science, okay?”
Shadow needed to hear this. He didn’t know why he had doubted himself when the results were clear, but the events from earlier had shaken him more than he realized.

Although he didn't want to talk, although he preferred to remain silent while he was in that cell, Shadow couldn't help the need to answer the jackal. "I'll finish you off!" He says in his raspy voice, while giving him a look full of hatred and rage.
At that response, Infinite punches him hard in the jaw, then forcefully grabs his cheeks with his hand, and forces him to look at him.
"No, you won't." He says in a calm, but threatening tone of voice. "I'll be the one to finish you off. I won't kill you, if that's what you're thinking, but that doesn't mean I can destroy you in other ways. You're going to suffer, Shadow the Hedgehog."
OR: An AU Sonic Forces where Shadow is also captured by Infinite (before the events of Forces), and he does horrible things to him during his confinement.

He wasn’t entirely sure how long it had been, but he definitely remembered crashing into the earth’s crust, he remembered stumbling through forests and waters and mountain ranges and sand dunes with the moon and the sun and the bright blue sky swapping their positions every time he looked upward. He remembered catching a whiff of that blue hedgehog’s scent coming from a cave. The scent was old, but it was the only familiar thing about his travels so far, so he dragged his tired body in and onto the floor. He knew that what he was doing, with blood staining his muzzle and his teeth aching from overuse, had always irritated the scientists and had been kept hidden from Maria. He knew on some level that it was wrong. But then, there was something inside that screamed at him to continue, to dig his fangs deeper and deeper.
