Merlin has been a lot of things over the past millennium, but most importantly a scholar obsessed with finding his Once and Future King.
It is but in the 21st century that he comes across a young Virginian boy with equally ambitious dreams. The thing that made Merlin look twice weren't his impossible dreams -anyone could dream- but his succes. If Gansey could do the impossible, if he could find Glendower's lost tomb, surely he can help Merlin on his quest to find King Arthur. -

The world moves on and changes over and over, more than once people cry that it will end soon enough, but it never does. And all the while, Merlin waits in his cabin by the lake, ready for the day that his Arthur might return to him.

“You loved him.”
It isn’t a question, nor a judgement. Leon, voice familiar and ever calm, simply states it like the fact it is. Merlin works his throat, isn’t sure he could speak around the lump in it even if his voice were not hoarse from long weeks of his self-imposed silent vigil. Instead he nods. He doesn’t have the strength to deny it in the wake of so much raw grief and crushed hope. Out of the corner of his eye he sees Leon nod too.
Merlin doesn’t know how much time passes before either of them speak again but it is long enough that Leon, without magic to sustain him, begins to shiver. Merlin opens his mouth to speak and finds that he cannot make words come. He clears his throat to try again, to tell Leon to leave this place before he catches his death, but he is interrupted as the knight commander speaks once more.
“I did, too.”

In a universe with a singular beginning and multiple endings, there are, too, multiple Merlins. But, there is only one Arthur Pendragon. And he dies in every ending, leaving immortal Merlin broken every time.
To save his best friend from witnessing one tragedy after another, Arthur takes matters into his own hands—and denounces the destiny between them for good.

(I went to the Ball of Camelot in Pierrefonds (the Merlin Castle) and thought it would be funny to write about Arthur returning to see the ball and Merlin working the event)

Between trying to navigate this strange new world of steel and electricity, and trying to find out what the hell was actually going on, Arthur and the knights find themselves on yet another mission: Finding Merlin.
Whilst locating said servant proves to be less of a challenge than expected, it turns out the hard part is actually contacting the now world famous celebrity.
