Merlin knows that there are a lot of aspects of manly knighthood that he'll probably never understand. For instance, hitting people when they've accomplished something. Maybe this is just a sign of the lack of real male influence in Merlin's childhood, but he'd not entirely sure why men feel the need to bruise one another to show approval. Injury is another. If the injury is any less than I'm-going-to-need-a-week's-bed-rest, it can be walked off (or at least the knight can pretend to walk it off while getting manly medical aid elsewhere).

The first time he sees the Bunansa’s youngest, Basch is nearly taken enough to say something unwise, even given his station at the time. He’s beautiful and untameable, though Basch sees him across the yard of new recruits into his brother’s regiment, freshly shorn and wearing a defiant expression he can’t place until later. Basch holds his tongue. He has learned some lessons in reserve for his time in Archades, learning to navigate in the elite society. He has enjoyed very few of these lessons.
Still, his eyes go back again and again to the trim young man with wicked eyes, fighting his way through every other contender like he’s proving something with every blow. He has skill and talent, and Basch has been a soldier long enough to see that the shine of resolve isn’t false.
Later, at home in the manse (how he’s still getting used to that privilege, the comfort that they could house their mother and themselves in, as part of their station) he asks Noah about it.
“Oh,” Noah says, after Basch’s description. “The Bunansa heir.”

In which Basch and Noah both became Judges instead of splitting up, and met Ffamran when he was submitted to train with their ranks. Very self-indulgent, I'm not sorry.
