"Hecate stares in disbelief at the woman's face in the mirror before her. It's Pippa, of course it's Pippa, but when has Pippa ever looked like this? Pippa's hair is untidy and mussed, and the little Hecate can see of her clothing is torn in several places, a few raw scrapes showing through the fabric. Her skin seems to hang a little too loosely on her face, as though there's not quite enough flesh on her bones to fill it out, and her face is covered in tear tracks, with puddles of mascara lending a rather gruesome aspect to the dark circles under her eyes. Not since they were 14-year-old students at Cackle's, sneaking into one another's rooms for unsanctioned sleepovers, has Hecate seen Pippa looking anything but pristinely put-together, let alone looking like this. Hecate can't imagine what has happened to put Pippa in this state, and she also can't imagine why Pippa is calling her about it. This is the first mirror call between them since college, when Pippa finally gave up on restoring their friendship."
