As much as Rex missed smoking sometimes—the smell of t’bac alone still made his hands twitch for a cig—having brothers again more than made up for it. He got through his training, earned the rank of captain, and was pretty much placed in charge of the entire 501st battalion, working alongside Cody more often than not. Life was good for a long while. Yeah, they were still at war, his brothers still died, but Rex felt a certain degree of stability he hadn’t felt in a while.
And then, Umbara happened. Pong Krell happened. And Rex…Rex needed a smoke.

Rik sighed. "I’ve got no choice but to keep it from her.”
“So,” Rex said, hating the air of finality coating his tone, “you’ll live your whole life a lie?”
Perhaps he shouldn’t have been surprised when Rik nodded heavily, but he was. Shocked to his very core.
“A lot of people live that way. Only most of them don’t have good reasons like we do..."Too soon after the hell that was Umbara, Rex's only surviving batchmate admits to mercy-killing a Jedi general, thrusting Rex into a desperate struggle against his conscience—a struggle that threatens to drive a stake between his friendship with Fives and destroy everything he once thought to be right.
(UPDATE: This story is currently being revised as I fix plot holes, add scenes, and tidy up the dialogue style. Chapters 1-15 are now up.)

The start of the war, and all that comes with it.
The first flower Obi-Wan hacked up on the bridge of the newly-named Negotiator was a marigold. Thankfully, this one didn’t come with roots—those were always the worst, leaving his throat sore or abraded for days after—and was relatively small. He’d felt the rattle in his lungs when as he’d first walked through the shining halls of the Venator, the soft-spun stoppage of petals and stem in his chest.
It was, Obi-Wan thought as he folded the little flower away into a handkerchief, not a bad one to christen the Venator with. The bright color of it nearly matched the shade of his battalion, a warm orange-gold that had no place in the cold maw of hyperspace.
“General?” the Commander was standing a few feet away, visor fixed on Obi-Wan. He could see his own reflection in the mirror dark of it; he thumbed at a speck of blood at the corner of his mouth and flashed the Commander a sanguine smile.
“Alright, Commander,” he said. “Nothing to worry about. Just a slight cough.”
It was the first lie he told Cody, but it certainly wouldn’t be the last.

The 501st Legion was a legion of elite clone troopers, made up of units like Torrent Company, who fought under the command of General Anakin Skywalker and Commander Ahsoka Tano. The 501st fought in many key battles throughout the Clone Wars, such as the Battle of Teth and the Battle of Coruscant, becoming one of the most well-known clone trooper legions. The 501st Legion also gained a reputation as an effective fighting force for often achieving victory against overwhelming odds.

Rex watched his commander as they moved slowly into the barracks. Some of the 501st were sitting up in their bunks, reading, or simply daydreaming with their heads bent. Most were sleeping, resting from injuries or the long battles they'd endured. But all of those clones paled in comparison to the empty bunks, ones that would soon be filled with shinies who hadn't yet seen the pain of war.

Rex pushed off the table, his face as resolute and impassive as ever as he turned to leave, brushing past Ahsoka without another word. It hurt more than she liked to admit. Then, her eyes landed on the datapad still on the table – the one Rex had been reading only minutes earlier. She snatched it up, turning to return it to its owner - only to trail off in a garbled yelp as she watched the Captain crumple to the floor.
Ahsoka scrambled forward, abandoning the datapad as she slid to Rex’s side, desperately feeling for a pulse, looking for the rise and fall of his chest – anything at all.
