Summary
„The law of gravity still held. The law of celestial motion still held. Only the laws he had built his life upon had crumbled, and he was drowning in the rubble.“
Javert attempts to end his life by drowning in the Seine after his worldview shatters at the barricade, but his body betrays him. Jean Valjean pulls him from the river and resuscitates him, leaving Javert hospitalised and his sanity questioned.
Future chapters will explore his journey in and out(?) of depression and despair.

Summary
“Perhaps, after tonight, the law no longer drives me as it has all my life. And if the law does not drive me, I do not know what will.”
“I know you, Javert. You may not like it, but I know you. I know the sense of purpose you speak of. That kind of drive doesn’t just go away. I believe that kind of passion conveys more about the person who feels it, rather than the cause of the passion. Even if it wanes with time, even if it is a source other than the law that moves you, you will find that drive again. You will find something to direct it to.”
--
Months after Valjean pulls Javert from the Pont au Change, they both find themselves without purpose. Valjean becomes hopeless without Cosette to care for. Meanwhile, Javert's growing doubt about his place in the police force leaves him aimless. But Javert and Valjean's lives have always been irreversibly intertwined. As they learn what it means to change and be changed, they may find that their lives are meant to intertwine in a way neither of them ever expected.
In case anyone needed another post-Seine Valvert slow burn ;)

Summary
“Wait!” Valjean very nearly shouted again, despairing. “You would have me bear witness to this?”
His voice carried strangely, surrounding Javert where he stood upon the parapet, not quite an echo. It settled warmly in his chest, like sunlight on a spring day to his deciduous heart. He could not account for this feeling. It grated against his misery, teasing at something like hope in his own sorry breast. What a cruel trick it was, to try to steal his hopelessness.
“I did not ask for you to be here,” Javert said, his own desperation beginning to bleed into his tone of voice. “You are free to leave me at any time.”
“Surely you must know I cannot do that.”
“Avert your gaze, then,” he said, near to a growl, “and let me be.”

Summary
The soup was simmering on the stove. Javert had tossed out the bread that had been sitting in the back of the cabinet for weeks and replaced them with fresh ones. He wondered—briefly—if Valjean would stir if he reached out to swap out the burned-out candles sitting on those silver candlesticks of his; after all the man had always been awfully protective of those candlesticks.

The five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Perhaps the one flaw of Javert was that he never quite learned how to accept defeat. -

Summary
Valjean frowns at him, as if Javert is being blasphemous, but Javert is unfazed; he knows Valjean knows it's true. Eventually, it is Valjean who looks away first. "I am sick. I cannot do other things."
Javert cannot help the feeling of panic rising in him, that Valjean may never see sense, and Javert will always have to watch the one he loves labor through some incomprehensible self inflicted purgatory. "You are being difficult," he snaps. "You are sick because you are not eating. So eat."
Valjean is trying to extricate himself from Cosette’s life, but Javert is there to fuss over him. And Javert is very fussy, in his own way.

‘Javert hadn’t realized he had fallen asleep until he was startled awake by the sound of the opening door. His ears perked up, his head turned as Valjean came into view. Against the autumn background of the forest, he looked beautiful. His cheeks were red from the cold and his white hair tossed about, unkempt.’

Summary
Javert turned slightly, preparing to leave.
But his feet refused to move. A flicker of memory stopped him - of one night of the past summer, at the barricade - that night something cracked within him, though he still couldn’t name it. Now, standing over the same man, he felt the fissure widen.
It was infuriating how the past refused to stay buried.

Summary
Javert has had another sleepless night. If Valjean can't help him rest? He'll stay awake in solidarity.
He found it hard to breathe, when the thoughts seized him. Before the guillotine, there had been the crushing-stone, and as ruthless was the bite of that swift blade, it was still more merciful than being smothered by slowly added weight. At night, his guilt compounded.

Summary
Never ceasing his duties, Javert looked up with wide, cloudy eyes and wordlessly asked for confirmation of his goodness and his obedience. He looked so young like this, unburdened by past worries and fears. Love and devotion were what ruled him in this state, and Valjean felt heady knowing it was all directed at him, all his doing.
Valjean sighed. “Yes, you are. My sweet, good boy. Your Papa loves you.”

Papa Valjean takes care of his dear Javert, in a multitude of ways.

Summary
In the dim light of the street lamps he saw the form of a man stand on the bridge. Valjean stopped short. He knew him. He’d have known him anywhere, so long had he haunted his dreams and his every waking step. Javert climbed on the parapet, staring down into the dark waters of the Seine.
When Javert doesn't turn up to arrest him, Valjean is worried he's found out about his other apartment and will encounter Cosette there. He finds him on the parapet of a bridge, ready to end his life and what else can he do than to stop him and take the distraught man home with him?
