Summary
John knows, of course he does, that he's a threat by his nature, has to be controlled, kept down, to keep that threat from reality. That's what it means to be a mage, enslaved and collared like all mages. Especially with the CIA, working in the dark, on the edge of things. Of course they can't afford to be indulgent, to be anything less than unrelenting, what someone else, somewhere else, might consider cruel.
It's correct, it's necessary.
That doesn't mean it's easy.

During the 800 years, Hua Cheng fantasizes about some ways Xie Lian might treat him when they meet up again. He most recently interacted with book 4!Xie Lian, so he and his degradation kink are a bit off. It’s okay, though, Xie Lian will eventually show him he deserves good things.

Hua Cheng knows of Xie Lian’s cultivation method, but perhaps he’s found another. Maybe, and Hua Cheng hopes against hope, he would allow Hua Cheng to serve him in that as well. In moments of weakness, Hua Cheng has imagined that he might, learned all that he could of the art of pleasure so that he would be ready if Dianxia - he laughs at himself - ever wanted that from him.
Hua Cheng shoves reality away and imagines Xie Lian commanding him to kneel. “You’ll do,” Xie Lian might say coldly, and allow Hua Cheng to pleasure him with his mouth.

.When I got to understanding what was going to happen and why- oh.
(Some things: yllz did something horrifying at koi tower including killing jgs it turns out bc he was predatoring (i think) Yanli. Haven't currently figured out how three years of sunshot happened. Yllz/wwx kills someone who makes remarks on Lan zhan. Wwx is having ghosts scout wrh's stuff. Jc shows up right before final fight which is offscreen. Huaisang is sneaky with a house he owns after, hiding wwx.)
Interesting things with how things are off and on screen with pov changes
He thinks of the letters he’s left with Wen Qing, letters she will have delivered to Jiang Cheng and Shijie. They’ve taken him all his time at the Cloud Recesses to write and he still isn’t sure he’s got it right, but he can’t risk leaving them with no explanation at all. If Lan Zhan demands his life for what he did, and wants it to be a public execution, or at least a known one, then Wen Qing will make sure his family know as much as he can tell them about why he acted as he did.
If he dies quietly, there’ll be no need for the letters to be sent. They’ve already been grieving the Wei Wuxian they knew.
