"Barbara Gordon," The kid that broke into her house greets her, almost like a supervillain if not for the borderline starstruck expression on his face, "I… I know you're paralyzed, and can't help on the field, but I don't know what to do and I can't just do nothing and I'm not making Dick come back to an abusive situation, he doesn't deserve that, and you don't deserve that either, but you haven't really left, I don't think, and I'm not really asking you to go back, I just, I need help, and you're smart. You'd know what to do."
"Pause," Barbara said, holding up one of her hands and using the other to massage her temple, "What are you talking about?"
The kid flushes, ducking his head. "I'm so sorry! I had a script and everything and then as soon as I got here I just forgot it!" He clears his throat and looks back up at her with a determined expression "I know you're Batgirl and I really, really need your help because Batman's lost himself in his grief and Gotham can't take him."
OR,
Batman is abusive, so instead of going to Dick Grayson, Tim Drake goes to Barbara Gordon when searching for a solution to Bruce's grief spiral.

Summary
After Tim tries to save Batman from himself as he's self-destructing in his grief, Tim is severely injured (to the point of permanent injury). Now Tim is deciding that he will have to become something else to save Batman and Gotham. To honor his hero Robin (the deceased Jason), Tim will become a shadowy figure who builds a team of misfit heroes to combat Gotham's darkness and Batman's grief.
When Red Hood debuts in Gotham, there will be some confusion on Hood's part. Who are the Guards? Why do they not get along with Batman? What is going on? But once he meets them and their leader, he makes a lot of realizations as he grows closer to Sentry and his people. -
