Summary
"One day, when she was two years old, she was playing in a garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother. I suppose she must have looked rather delightful, for Mrs. Darling put a hand to her heart and cried, 'Oh, why can't you remain like this forever?' That was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth, Wendy knew she must grow up."
---First lines of Peter and WendyWendy wakes up on her third birthday, her first birthday after discovering she must grow up. Her parents are perplexed and troubled by her ensuing meltdown.
---
Mrs. Darling enjoyed Wendy's birthday more than her own. She and Mr. Darling loved their daughter more than anything, and both of her birthdays so far had been so joyous. To Mr. Darling, children's birthdays were milestones, part of all their growth and achievements. For his own daughter, in particular, he was willing to let the hassles of budgeting go and spend some extra. It made Mrs. Darling so happy, seeing the two loves of her life so fulfilled on Wendy's special days. As for her, birthdays were more bittersweet. They were a celebration of her baby's life, but each year brought a twinge of wistfulness that seemed lost on Mr. Darling.
