“Mmmm.”
That sound in Brekker’s raspy voice is cold enough to freeze ice. She expects him to respond angrily to her information, but he remains unnaturally unruffled with that unreadable, birdlike expression on his face.
After several beats too long to be comfortable, he continues, “This must have been a relatively recent development if they haven’t figured you out yet. Oh well. It won’t be long. You’re not as subtle as you think you are.” And Heleen knows a threat when she hears one.

Kaz tilted his head, just enough to glance at her. There was something frayed about the gesture.
“I’m not going to collapse,” he muttered, though the breath behind it wavered.
Inej looked at him fully then, no hint of amusement in her face. His defences were cracked open enough for her to see what lay beneath them.
“You can’t lie your way through a fever.”

Summary
Kaz had to admit the traffickers were surprisingly clever – for thick-skulled pirates, at least. He had not expected to be ambushed on the site of his future textile manufacture out of town. Or, well, what was supposed to be the site of his new project. Seeing as he’d been set up, it seemed he would need to find a new abandoned warehouse to repurpose. It was an annoying detail that would have to wait, however, since he was presently tied up to a chair.
Inej's enemies capture Kaz to lure her in a trap. It doesn't end well for them.

Inej laughed a little shakily. “I don’t know what I’d do without you,” she admitted.
“Same thing you’re already doing,” Specht teased, “just not quite as well.”
There was a moment, then, that hung in the air like the mist off the water at night: delicate in a way that made him feel sharply, overwhelmingly human. Then he looked into her face and she was looking at him, and she was leaning forward and he was pulling her down to him and their mouths met in a shock of heat.
TLDR: Inej, Specht, and some catharsis after a battle to take a slave ship.

Summary
Inej usually would not try to save those who already sold their indentures. It would take breaking laws of almost any country such indenture takes place. But it won’t be the first time she challenges the law, or breaks it, even.
Perhaps, she thought, her Saints were plotting her to return of a promise of coming back. Even though usually ‘coming back’ means the two will see each other in a month, or in a couple of weeks. Her ‘coming back’ was happening after a year and a half after the shores of Kerch vanished from her view. But ‘usual’ never worked for a certain two people.
