They meet at a New Year’s Eve party. Francis doesn’t want to be there, but it has become one of the social events he is forced to attend by James Ross and his lovely wife Ann. He is badgered each year to get dressed, put on a smile even if it’s fake, and join in with the world for a night. For a few years he got a midnight kiss from Sophia before they parted ways, finally understanding one another in no uncertain terms. And though it is painful at first, Francis is grateful for their parting. Sophia is far happier living a life without his interference, without his alcoholic crutch, without the uncertainty of his career.
But as 2010 drew to a close, Francis made the delightful acquaintance of a man he hated on first sight. James Fitzjames was beautiful and loud and drew the eye of everyone in the room. His pretty lips and pretty eyes make Francis sneer. The ridiculous stories of his gap year in China, the hiking trip across half the bloody world, the time he got shot in China… It all serves to make Francis think he’s a colossal prick.

He was like a ticking bomb, and Keith feared the day that he might – would – go out. He didn’t know what he would do, where he would go.
But he was still here. Even after all this time, being exposed to the unfiltered air of the world, he was still hanging on. James was still alive, and that was what mattered.

Summary
James can't stop caressing the fabric of the dress.
He knows it's not the softest thing he's ever touched, but it feels like it: the silk is of such high quality that it feels pleasantly fresh under his trembling touch and looks almost wet to the eye, for how shiny and sleek it is. The deep green shade Francis has picked -which was incidentally complementing the deep red blush on his ears so well,- makes the gown look like a precious jewel itself, so much that James almost feels covered in a cascade of tiny, shining emeralds.

Francis certainly didn’t care, one way or another, whether or not - that was, whether it was true… He clicked on the “OUR TEAM” webpage and scrolled to James Fitzjames’ picture. Smiling, with a shining coating of confidence, below which there was a hint - just a smidge - of vulnerability. Uncertainty. Francis stared at the photo as if was able to give up James’ secrets. The photo was a few years old now; James’ hair (though still long) was a little longer in the photo and there were fewer laugh lines around his eyes. The lines on his cheeks were the same though, like two long dimples, or brackets - between which, cupped inside them, was, naturally enough, his mouth. Francis looked at James’ lips for a long moment.
