Summary
Ten years after acid-tongued bookworm turned successful attorney Elphaba Thropp took the road trip from hell with her sister's dramatic, self-absorbed college friend, Galinda Upland, she has a few chance encounters with the blonde that draw her back into Galinda's theatrical, color-coded orbit: this time, as a friend.
Elphaba’s growing bond with Galinda would be reason enough for Elphaba to question her sanity, but things get worse when it becomes clear a powerful force is emerging within her, one that threatens to completely upend the life she's built for herself. When her go-to tactics of denial and emotional repression fail, Elphaba is forced to reconsider everything she ever believed about loving, loathing, and the magic that lies in everything in between.

“Oh. Oz,” Galinda breathes, taking a step forward. “You’re me. Future me.” Grass crunches under her feet. “Do you have any advice for the you of eleven years ago?”
“I will give you only one piece of advice. Any more, and I’m afraid of what might happen,” Glinda tells her, and Galinda sits up straighter, rapt. Glinda’s face hardens, steels. She scowls into the darkness of the woods around them.
“Stay away from Elphaba Thropp.”
Or: On the night of her nineteenth birthday, Galinda bungles a spell and winds up in touch with an older version of herself. Glinda the Good leaves her with a single piece of advice. Galinda has some trouble taking it.

“I’m fine. Things are going well. I…” Glinda hesitated. She tried not to ever say anything too sappy to Elphaba, who never knew how to accept such things gracefully, but she couldn’t help it. “I miss you,” Glinda admitted softly. Again, the line went silent for a beat too long. Glinda opened her mouth to soften the admission, but before she could, Elphaba’s quiet voice filled her ear.
“I miss you, too.”
After graduation, Elphaba and Glinda find themselves in separate cities and therefore apart for the first time in years. They keep in contact through letters, phone calls, and occasional visits. When Elphaba won’t stop being elusive about how she’s faring after being cut off financially, Glinda worries a completely appropriate amount. (She tries to offer a completely appropriate amount of help, too.)
