    Summary

He frowns and picks the picture up, angling it to better see it in the light of the fluorescents of the hallway shining in. He looks over to Ellie’s sleeping face, smooth now in a brief reprieve from nightmares. He looks back to the picture. Back to Ellie. Back to the picture.

It’s…it’s her. It has to be. Same nose, same eyes, same ears. The baby has the soft roundness of a young infant that makes it hard to tell jaw shape or cheekbones, but there’s no denying it.

He’s holding a picture of an infant Ellie.

    Summary

“Are we thinking white sheep or black sheep?”

The question, unrelated to anything, pulls her back to her body enough to frown. She’s shaking still, curled against Joel as tight as she can get, having woken up from a nightmare that left her screaming, convinced someone was sawing through her arm to roast it over their fire. In reality, Joel’s too-big shirt on her had just gotten twisted around her shoulder in her sleep, but the dream had been fucking vivid, and it’s like she can feel phantom chopping at the base of her arm.

“What?” She asks, voice a croak. She thinks briefly about tilting her head up to look at Joel when she asks it, but she’s tucked up in a little ball against him, and the feel of him all around her makes her feel safe in a way she’s been worrying she’d never feel again.

“For our moon sheep ranch when this is all over,” he says, resting his cheek on top of her head. “I think black sheep would be easier to find. The white ones might get lost.”

(alternate ending fic following the end of episode 8 up through 9 ft. joel being a good dad and talk about blue sheep)

    Summary

When her stomach finally settles and she’s stopped dry heaving, he picks her up and carries her around to the passenger seat. The glovebox yields an old packet of Kleenex, and he wipes her face off for her while she does her best to help while she’s still uncoordinated from the drugs in her system. After an attempt at taking the tissue ends with her poking herself in the eye, he gently catches her hands and sets them on her lap.

“I’ve got it,” he tells her, and then she just closes her eyes and leans her head back.

He lets her rinse her mouth out and then take a few sips of water, and he waits to make sure it’ll stay down before he buckles her in and leans the seat back so she can sleep more if she wants.

“Happened?” She asks, eyes fluttering open through sheer stubbornness, but he just cups her clammy cheek and kisses her temple.

“I’ll tell you later,” he tells her.

Trusting him, she falls asleep once more.

    Summary

“Her name was Rose,” she says tonelessly. “Her sister’s in my group at school.”

He closes his eyes as he leans against the corner of the wall behind her. He opens them and reaches for her hair, smoothing it back from her face in slow strokes. She leans back into the touch.

“We’ll have that delivery next spring,” he reminds her softly. It’s a promise he’ll be bringing backup for to ensure they keep their word when it’s time to collect. There won’t be enough for everyone yet, but it’ll still go a long way in keeping Jackson safe.

It just doesn’t help them now.
