It was when Wilbur had received that stupid acceptance letter.

When Tommy crests the prime path and notices the obsidian covering his home, exhaustion settles deep in his bones and he slumps beneath the weight of it. Wilbur walks up beside him and sucks in a sharp breath of surprise at the sight.

Tommy is exhausted. Wilbur is guilty. Both boys have a moment.

Tommy grins sleepily and reaches a hand out to rub gently against the creature’s snout.
The wolf lets out a sleepy grumble at the motion of nimble fingers tracing over smooth fur, and brown eyes that swirl with flecks of gold open to stare into Tommy’s ocean blue.
“Good morning Wilbur! How’d you sleep?”

Summary
Tommy yawns quietly and nuzzles further against the couch, hunching into himself to hide from the sudden chill of the room. The movie playing on-screen is just background noise at this point and only succeeds in helping Tommy feel tired and oddly fuzzy.
"Are you feeling alright Tommy? You're falling asleep on me bud." Wilbur's gentle voice does nothing to help soothe the growing fuzz in his mind and he can't help but let out a whimper of confusion.
"What's wrong, sunshine?"
