***SPOILERS FOR STRANGER THINGS 5 VOLUME 1***

Lucas picked up the Stephen King book they were in the middle of — Salem's Lot — and pulled out a worn envelope he'd tucked between the pages for safekeeping.

"I still have this," he told Max, returning back to the bed. He turned the sealed envelope in his hand, his eyes tracing the letters of his name that she'd written onto it. By this point, he'd done that more times than he could count.

"I haven't opened it, cause in my mind, that would mean that you were gone for real, and I don't think that, I don't want to think that," he explained to her, feeling dread rising in him, constricting his throat as his rambly sentence went on.

"But after last night, after how close of a call it was…"

"If something like that happens again, I don't know if I could bear it, not knowing what your last words were."
