“Want me to go in with you?” Steve asked, while helping her out of the car and into the wheelchair. Max nodded, because, yeah, she didn’t want to do this alone.

For over two years, they’ve been dealing with the Upside Down.
They thought they’d killed the demogorgon and won, but they hadn’t. Turns out there was something much bigger and much worse than the demogorgon and they’d been attacked and chased and hunted. But hey, at least El wasn't dead. She had finally closed the gate that had let the demogorgon into Hawkins, and the Mind Flayer had come out of Will. Logically, they should all be safe now, right? That November had been the end of it - they could go back to their normal lives and get to be stupid teenagers that only worried about their girlfriends and how much change they had in their pockets for ice cream and movies. Right?
Wrong. Again.
The monster had been locked out here with them. They had never won anything before. Why would they win now?"The Mind Flayer bides its time and the Party has to come to terms with the idea that victory has an aftermath.

He hates that Max still lives there, hates that there’s nothing that he can do, hates that he gets told what happens in that house and can just be a witness to it, because Max only tells him and Lucas the whole of it, and what she only tells Lucas, he usually tells Steve.
“No,” Max protests, and her voice gets pitchy, urgent, before she remembers to hush herself. “If he knows I called you he’ll kill me. Please, please don’t come.”
AKA: The entire student body of Hawkins has simultaneously developed the stomach bug from impromptu sewage-related food contamination, and Steve "The Babysitter" Harrington has to gather one of his wayward charges. It ends badly.

Max Mayfield wanted a fresh start after finally defeating Vecna. A new location to forget all the traumatic bullshit she had been forced to endure for several years and a place to forget the friends she had lost. Now, moving in with her Uncle Jack in his apartment in Derry, Maine, she hopes that she can use her free time in the summer to finally catch up on the schoolwork she missed while in that damned coma. But the scars left by her time in Hawkins, both seen and unseen, make this difficult. To make things even more complicated, she starts to develop a sense of empathy with the redheaded girl across the hall and wonders if there might be a way to save her from her shitty home life. But, all of that may have to wait for the time being as it would seem that Derry is just as strange as Hawkins, if not stranger. And there might be an entity lurking beneath the town far worse than anything that emerged from the Upside Down.
(Basically takes some liberties with the end of season 5, as well as doing a crossover with IT. Essentially Max finds her becoming a member of the Losers Club and begins to wonder if there might be a way to save from suffering the same fate as the Party)
