Summary
It’s the light in the entry hall that does it. It’s a high-efficiency fluorescent bulb and it’s blinking in and out as Xingchen takes off his shoes, making Xingchen think of the lights Xue Yang gave him as a gag gift on his last birthday.
“Uh oh,” Xue Yang says by way of greeting as he bursts into the entry. “Sorry, sorry I meant to change it earlier but I got sidetracked.” Then he seems to actually see Xingchen. “Someone had a shit day.”
Xingchen sighs, pasting on a smile that feels wan. “It’s fine,” he says. Xue Yang scowls at him. “It’s over,” he says, his smile growing wider. “It’s better now that I’m home with you.”
Xue Yang bounds over, snaking his arms around Xingchen’s neck, giving him a loud, exaggerated kiss. “You know it,” he says. Then grins, his canines glinting in the light. “Plus, I know a surefire way to help you unwind.”
Xingchen angles his head, giving Xue Yang a look, waiting for it to settle, for Xue Yang’s eyes to go a bit dark. “So do I,” he murmurs. -

Then pinching it, hard enough that Song Lan can’t help the tiny noise that spills out—
He freezes. Holds his breath. Hears nothing and they don’t pound on the wall so they must not have heard him. But then a wave of shame sinks over him—fuck, he’s being a pervert. Listening to his neighbors fuck and—Song Lan shoves his hand out. Goes to the kitchen and pours a very large glass of water and slams it down. Then resolutely goes into the bathroom and gets ready for bed.Series

“A-Yang,” Xingchen chides, just as Zichen snorts. Xingchen turns to him with a cutting glance because he is not being helpful. “What’s wrong, sweetheart? Are you sick?” A-Yang does tend to become a bit of a child when he’s ill which, fortunately for them all, is rare. “Did something happen at work last night?”
“You could say that,” a-Yang mutters, but it’s so quiet Xingchen barely hears it. Then his heart starts to pound, drowning out anything a-Yang might’ve said to follow it.
“Please come out of there and talk to us,” Xingchen pleads. “We can’t help you unless you do.”
A-Yang snorts. Finally shoves his head out from under the covers. He looks disheveled—no, more than that. He’s pale and he has such dark circles under his eyes— “I got fucking cursed,” he says. “By a motherfucking talisman that wasn’t even aimed at me. I was just the lucky bastard who got caught in the crossfire.” And then something else comes out from under the covers—a tentacle. Like the kind a squid might have.Series

“Please,” she says, weak as fuck. She makes a half-hearted attempt to get up, mostly letting Xingchen stop her. “I have to—”
“Hmm.” It’s an echo of Song Lan’s from just a minute ago. He skims his hand up and over Xue Yang’s belly, pressing down. “Oh. You do.”
And then the absolute fucker runs a single knuckle over the seam of her jeans.
Song Lan continues to press hot, open-mouthed kisses along her neck. Then right at the spot in front of her ear. “How badly? Can you hold it?”
Xue Yang makes this very embarrassing noise as she sinks into Song Lan. It could maybe be interpreted as assent, only—it’s more like surrender. -

“Look, are we doing this or what?” Xue Yang asks, knowing he’s doing it just to get them to notice him, hating that he’s doing it just to get them to notice him. Why does he care? They’re just his annoying neighbors who make him put out his cigarettes and turn down his music. He doesn’t even like them. The only reason he agreed to this ‘dinner’ was because it was pretty clear that they invited him here for sex.
So why the fuck does he care so much? Why does it make his gut clench at the thought that they might’ve changed their mind?
Fuck this. He doesn’t care.
He stands. “It’s pretty clear you’re not going to put your money where your mouths are. It’s cool; I got shit to do at home, anyway.” It’s a lie. He has nothing to do but maybe have a smoke—making fucking certain the smoke blows into their yard—and own some asshole in Medal of Honor.
“Sit down.” The order doesn’t come from Song Lan as Xue Yang expects, but from Xiao Xingchen. And it’s almost not an order at all because his voice is so soft and not at all commanding—but Xue Yang finds himself obeying anyway.Series
