“That man knows you’re home, right?”
Kate reaches up and tucks a lock of hair behind her ear before picking up the stack of bowls and silverware to make her way over to the kitchen table.
“Katherine Elizabeth.”
“What?” Kate looks over to see her mom standing there with her hands on her hips.
Her mom hasn’t looked at her with such exasperation since Kate was sixteen, and a trip to town to go to the grocery store had turned into Kate disappearing for half the day because she got caught up chasing cloud formations. It hadn’t helped that she’d forgotten her phone. Cathy had been about to call the police when Kate finally returned home, about five hours later than she was expected.
“You told Tyler you’re home, didn’t you?”
No. No she didn’t.

“I have to really look at the budget,” she finally says. “I can take leave from NOAA, but it’ll be unpaid. I’m hoping I can sublet my apartment so I break even on that. And I have to figure out what I can pay you and the crew. I wish the polymer wasn’t so damn expensive,” she mutters. “But it is what it is, I guess.”
“We’ll figure it out,” he promises. How, he’s not exactly sure. But if Kate’s coming back, Tyler’s going to make sure she can do this, one way or another. Maybe he hasn't known her that long, in the grand scheme of things, but there’s something about this that he knows is important. And this project is important to her, maybe more than anything else, so of course he’s going to do everything in his power to make sure she succeeds.
