Jacob was never good at asserting himself. Not only did his fear of rejection or hatred or anger (and so on) result in a particularly meek demeanor, especially when it came to things he wanted, this was never a problem he’d had before. Growing up it was the opposite. He never had to worry about being the receiver of anyone’s attention, he faded into the background without even meaning to. And now it was like Melissa had him and only him on her mind. Jacob found that he hated this immensely.
