Hera doesn’t even look up at first. She’s trying to talk and soothe and juggle all at once, and she answers out of pure reflex.
“No, no, I’m fine— I’ve got it— I just need to—”Her bag slips at the worst possible moment.
The strap slides down her shoulder, yanking her balance. Hephaestus gives a miserable hiccup and starts wailing harder, that baby sharp cry that slices through bone. Ares sways, his small hand losing its hold on her leg for a heartbeat. Hera gasps and shifts to catch him—
It all happens at once.Her sentence dies. Her composure wavers.
The exhaustion wins.
She lets out one thin, defeated exhale. And nods.
“Okay. Yes. Please.”

Hera’s fingers tightened around her tablet. “How temporarily?”
“Few weeks. Possibly longer. Budget dependent.” A pause. Then, gently: “Please don’t kill anyone.”
That was new. Interesting. Concerning.“And my reassignment is…?” Hera asked.
Hestia hesitated. Just a fraction of a second. Long enough for Hera to clock it.
“Office 4B.” Hestia said.
Hera stopped walking.
4B was not unoccupied. 4B was not neutral territory.
4B belonged to Zeus.

She barely manages a huff before he reaches for her hand. Their fingers lace together without thought, muscle memory stronger than caution. He presses his forehead to hers, breath warm, familiar.
“You’re late.” she whispered.
He laughed softly as his hands found her waist, familiar and reverent all at once. “You wound me.” he murmured, breath warm against her ear. “I crossed half the sky.”
“Poor thing.” she said. “How did you survive?”
She then laughs under her breath, pressing her face briefly into his shoulder. There’s the sound of sandals in the distance—someone passing—and they freeze, still as statues, breaths held. When the sound fades, Zeus kisses her quickly, recklessly, like he’s stealing something and intends to get away with it.
“You’re going to get us caught.” she murmurs against his mouth.
“You say that every time.” he replies. “And yet.”
“And yet.” she agrees, kissing him again, quicker now, giddy and breathless. “You keep coming.”
“Can you blame me?”

Their robes hang loose, unfastened in the way only privacy allows. Hera’s hair spills freely down her back, a dark cascade that brushes her shoulders when she walks. Zeus’s is no better—unbound, unruly, falling into his eyes as he follows half a step behind her. In the low torchlight, stripped of crowns and thunder and ceremony, they look almost ordinary. Almost.

“If anyone sees us like this,” she murmurs, “hair undone, half awake, creeping around barefoot—” She shakes her head. “We must look ridiculous.”He gives an easy shrug, unbothered, eyes gleaming with amusement.
“It’s our palace.” he says quietly. “If the king and queen want bread at midnight, the palace will survive the scandal.”

Hebe stared up at them, eyes wide and bright as little moons. Hera traced a fingertip along her daughter’s cheek, marveling at how warm and new her skin was. Zeus gently tapped her tiny foot, pretending to be shocked when she kicked him. Hebe squealed at that, thrilled to be the center of everything.
It was a lazy afternoon—quiet, slow, unhurried.
And woven through the gentleness was something deeper, something soft on the edges and heavy with meaning. A sense that this child, this tiny late born daughter, had changed the entire rhythm of their lives.
She had arrived long, long after the chaos. After the wars and betrayals, after the storms they’d both created and endured. There had been peace before her—but not this kind.
This was a different peace.
A warm, low tide peace. A hearth instead of thunder. Something tender that neither of them had expected anymore, especially not together.
