“Most best friends don’t offer to fake date their best friends.”

“Exactly,” Fabian says, proudly puffing his chest out. “That’s what makes me an even better best friend than most best friends.”

(Or: Riz thinks he might be aromantic, but he wants to be sure. Fabian has what he's sure is a genius idea, no matter what everyone else thinks about it.)

"so if i fail i can blame it on bad timing / i love nothing that i can lose” – noah kahan, catastrophize

Fabian hisses in pain when Riz presses a gauze pad against a particularly nasty cut on his side. “I think we all wish that. What was Aguefort thinking?”

“That he could get a bunch of kids out here to handle this instead of doing it himself, I imagine,” Adaine answers. “You sure you’re okay, Riz? Kristen’s right, you took way more hits than normal.”

There’s lots of words on the tip of his tongue. I’m fine, of course, but they didn’t believe it the first two times and he doubts they will the third. And, more bitter than he intends, Yes, no thanks to Fabian. Except that’s not fair, because he’s supposed to be able to dodge and hide and do his job without help, and Fabian was just keeping the people in the front safe. So Riz shouldn’t need bardic inspiration; not today, not ever.

or: five times the bad kids made riz feel left out, and one time they tried to fix it

    Summary

    There were three possibilities:

One: Jon was telling the truth—and so were Damian’s memories—and Damian’s childhood best friend really had been abducted at age eleven by a mysterious woman who had made everyone forget he ever existed, even his own father.

Two: Damian’s memories were accurate, but the thing Damian had met in the park was not Jon, and was using his memories to manipulate Damian for some nefarious purpose, presumably connected to whatever had made Jon disappear in the first place.

Three: Jon Kent had never existed, and the thing in the park had implanted those memories in Damian’s mind—again, for nefarious purposes.

It was tempting to believe in the first option. Damian’s memories of Jon were so clear: clinging to Goliath’s back and laughing as they soared through the night sky. Crouching by his open window, daring Jon to be bad for once and sneak out. Swearing to Superman that he would protect him.

If Jon was real, Damian had failed profoundly to keep that promise.

    Summary

“No Kryptonite,” Jon assures him. No Kryptonite otherwise I would be dead right now. “And I’m not hurt. I just… I don’t like volcanos.”

Damian stares flatly at him. He pulls his hands back and Jon finds himself already missing the warmth. (Which is stupid. They’re literally standing on a pit of lava.)

“You don’t like volcanos?” he echoes flatly.

“Yeah, they’re, um, not my thing.”
