Chapter Text
“Thanks for the ride, Rex.” the P.A.D chief gratefully expressed to his young officer as the grey patrol Jeep pulled into the north-side borough of Zombie Town.
“Yeah, thanks so much!” his daughter lauded.
“Indeed. We’re grateful for your assistance. It certainly made our trek much easier. At least now we don’t have to pay a fine for overnight beach parking.” his wife added.
The officer bashfully scratched the back of his head and replied, “Anytime guys! I-I mean sir, ma’am, and young lady.” While his self-correction was unnecessary in their eyes, they appreciated it all the same.
“Still, are you sure you don’t mind picking us up when we’re ready to return?” Dale double-checked.
“Don’t mind one bit; it’s definitely easier than arresting some nut job causing trouble.” he replied.
“Speaking of, alert us if those harassing troublemakers appear around Coach Aster’s fro-yo cart again. No matter what connections they have, or threats they utilize, do not let them out of their holding cells. We want to have the chance to have a little chat with them.” Missy coldly spoke.
“Yes ma’am. Understood.” he saluted.
“In other words, tear them a new one.” Addison thought.
“Adelio shred troublemakers! No one hurts coach! No one hurts others!” she growled.
“I know mom and dad would love to have you in there with them, girl. But we’ll have to let the judge do that. Don’t worry though, you already know that he/she will.” she assured.
“If judge allow pack punish troublemakers…”
“Then I promise you’ll be the first one to use your fangs on’em.” she swore. Everyone exited the vehicle and grabbed their duffle bags, folding camp chairs and table, sleeping bags, drone and laptop case, and bags filled with various groceries out of the trunk.
“See you all later!”
“Thank you again, Rex.” “Thanks again, sir!” the Wells waved, and he drove off to resume his patrol.
“C’mon, let’s go!” Addison excitedly yipped, and picked up the majority of the bags.
“Hold on, kiddo. You don’t have to carry all that.” Dale tried to halt.
“It’s okay, it’s not heavy.” she assured, and started jogging through the neighborhood.
“Don’t go too far ahead!” Missy reminded.
“I won’t!”
Her parents just fondly shook their heads at her enthusiasm, and picked up their pace as they walked towards the Amartiwok Woods boundary line.
“I swear she could probably bench four hundred pounds by the time she’s a senior.” he remarked as they watched her easily carry the heavy load.
Even though Addison asked the pack to leave their wagons by the gate, carrying all of the supplies from their house to their territory would’ve been quite tiring. At first their considerate white wolf suggested just dropping her off with the supplies near the border and she’d wait for them, but they shot that down due to it being a major safety concern. Even though she was powerful and could easily defend herself if needed, they didn’t want to put her in that predicament.
Next she suggested parking in the beach parking lot closest to Unification Gate, but Missy reminded her that all cars had to be off the premises by 9:00 P.M. That law was implemented because multiple inconsiderate out-of-towners decided to use that area, as well as the other parking spaces, as personal party zones. The damage to the local ecosystem, as well as the numerous complaints of citizens being harassed were the proverbial final straws, and the council promptly shut those illicit activities down.
After that, she was going to propose just parking their car near either Bonzo’s, Eliza’s, or Zoey’s house, but realized it wouldn’t be fair to suddenly put them in charge of watching it. Plus, there was a good chance that if those troublemakers somehow recognized that that was the mayor’s and chief’s vehicle, they’d probably vandalize it to send a message that they were untouchable. That’s when Dale suggested asking one of the officers to be their escort, and Rex was more than willing to help.
Missy merely hummed at his analysis while watching their ecstatic, energetic daughter, but he readily sensed the underlying wistfulness.
“…Missy? What’s wrong?” he asked.
She released a forlorn **siiigghh** and replied, “…Just wishing that I didn’t waste so much time valuing the perception of others. We could’ve had more wonderful outdoor times like this; she always loved being outside.”
He placed a steadying hand on her shoulder, and softly said, “…I know. But we’ve been given a second chance to make up for all those missed opportunities. But…if I end up with a cockroach on my face, we’ll have to consider glamping instead of sleeping in their den the next time we visit Amartiwok Woods. You know I’m not kidding.”
That produced a hearty laugh out of her, and she replied, “Oh I know. That’s why you’re wearing three bug repellant wristbands on each arm. I swear, that scream and subsequent rug burn will forever be etched into my memory banks. Though to be fair, bugs can enter our house; they just need a crease.”
“And that’s what Ortho Home Defense is for, and Jellybob’s Pest Control if we need to go atomic on them.”
“True that.” she smiled, and leaned up to give him a kiss. “Thanks for going atomic on those stinkin’ thinkin’ fleas.”
“Anytime Missy.” he smiled back, and they further increased their pace to continue having their happy girl in their line of sight.
Soon they crossed the stone bridge, and arrived at the border gate. As promised the pair of wagons were placed by the entrance, but it was already open. Before the Seabrook leaders could even begin to formulate all manner of criminal and civil charges for whoever was foolish enough to trespass onto the werewolves’ turf, Addison assured, “Mom, dad, it’s alright. But…wait here for a sec.”
They were about to ask why, but were put at ease when they noticed that her already wagging tail increased its spinning speed. She carefully set her cargo down near them, and got down on all fours. One moment she was by their sides, the next she was sprinting faster than those go-karts they drove yesterday – disappearing into the surrounding foliage beyond the gate.
Suddenly they slightly jumped in place when they heard “GRAAH!” “GRROOWL!” before seeing their daughter and her cherished mate tumbling out of the dense vegetation. After a couple rotations, the beta had her pinned underneath him.
“Heh, still pinned ya.” Wyatt smiled. “Though…why didn’t you teleport?”
“What? And ruin the fun?” she playfully replied, making him chuckle. “Plus, I knew you wouldn’t pounce on me while I was carrying our stuff.”
“Heh, nope. Still, the fact that you found me while I was downwind is incredible!”
“What can I say? I got you forever, my pakma kiktu.” she smiled back, and his tail giddily spun at his affectionate nickname.
He would’ve lavished her with loving licks until the moon rose, but he remembered that her parents were right there. He helped her up, and they dusted any dried foliage off of one another before walking back over to her stunned parents. “Good morning Alpha Wells.” he politely addressed.
“Good morning to you as well, Wyatt.” Missy smiled. “I must say, that certainly was a spirited greeting you gave our daughter.” and he slightly tensed up at that. But his worry was for naught as she followed up with, “Perhaps one day we’ll be able to withstand it, and counter it as well.”
“You already know I’ll have my phone out ready to record that. It’ll be a nice precursor to when you lose our little throw pillow bet.” Dale smirked.
“Hmph, so you say. If anything, that’ll just steel my focus. In fact, I think I’ll start looking at spa services once we’re done with the paperwork.” she smirked back.
“Heh, they’re just as competitive as us.” he whispered, and the white wolf fondly nodded at that.
Just as she was about to pick up her cargo, Wyatt assisted with picking up some of the bags. “Thank you, pakma kiktu.” she smiled. “And thanks for bringing the wagons. But…you didn’t need to wait around for us. It’s still breakfast time.”
“Don’t worry. I already ate, and I wasn’t waiting long. Plus, I couldn’t wait to see your pretty smiling face.” and that placed a small blush on her cheeks. “Besides, this’ll be perfect weight training.”
“Hold on, you’re not pulling both of them.” she denounced. “I’m helping out too.”
“Heh, alright.” he agreed, knowing full well there was no changing her mind. “And Alpha Wells, there’s plenty of room for you to sit in the wagons too.”
“We appreciate that Wyatt, but we’ll be alright.” the mayor assured.
“Yeah, our legs could do with some walking with all the sitting we do at work.” the P.A.D chief added.
Once everything was placed inside the wheeled carrying containers, the werewolves went back into the dense foliage in order to take off their clothes and shift into their lycanthrope forms. However, the Seabrook leaders noticed the beta going in a different direction than their daughter. “Hmm…” they thoughtfully hummed as the light from their tie-dyed cocoons shone through the leafage.
The complimentary symbol and colored lycanthropes emerged carrying their shirt, shoes, and pants. They put their outfits in the wagons and hitched up their harnesses.
[Ready sunshine?]
[Ready!] and they started pulling the wagons at a brisk pace; somehow they restrained themselves from turning it into a race.
As they walked, Dale and Missy observed their interactions. While there was the air of “puppy love”, it clearly went beyond that. Despite their short time together, deep roots full of unconditional compassion and respect were buried deep within them. Still, they needed to do their due diligence in order to ensure that they wouldn’t be removed, and flourish into a resilient, lifelong forest. Once they reached Claw Rock, Addison asked her parents, [Ready to howl?]
“…I suppose. But let me just apologize in advance should we inadvertently say anything crass.” she warned.
[It’s alright, Alpha Wells. We know you don’t mean it.] the beta assured.
[Yeah, don’t be shy now! Howl like you’re at the house, or even at the stadium!] she encouraged.
Missy gently grabbed her husband’s hand and said, “C’mon hun, let’s ring the doorbell.” Everyone took a deep breath, tipped their heads back and belted out, “ROUUURRROOOOOO!” “ARRROOOOOOOOOUUUUOOOOOO!”
“…What did we say?” he asked.
[No curse words. Just “Lemings are falling from the sky.”] the white wolf smiled.
[That’d be an awesome snack, though.] the black wolf grinned, and licked his chops.
After Missy translated what they said, Dale replied, “Heh, sounds like a tasty werewolf treat for sure.”
All of a sudden the lycanthropes' ears perk up to the return howl from their pack mates. [Heh, my team’s really excited that we’re finally here.] she happily voiced.
“Then we better not keep them waiting.” the mayor smiled, and they resumed their trek.
Unsurprisingly Addison was smothered underneath a werewolf mosh pit the moment they arrived and unhitched themselves from the wagons, while Missy and Dale were scooped up in a big ol’ Usawa hug.
“…I swear, the pack could have their own chiropractic office if they felt like it.” the P.A.D chief thought when heard all the healing cracks in their backs.
One thing they did notice in the midst of being lovingly squeezed was that everyone had clothes on, but sensed it wasn’t because of a lack of trust towards them. Granted panic and concern was flowing through their minds over Addison’s well-being the last time they rushed here – causing them not to be uncomfortable by their nudity. But now they realized they just wanted them to be comfortable in their second home. That comfortability was amplified considerably as the tingly light erupted from the white wolf’s fur from all the loving good vibes imparted unto her.
Worion lightly laughed and said, “Alright everyone, that’s enough. Let’s get our guests get settled in.” Slowly but surely they released them from their loving hold – allowing them to stretch and reset their bodies from being temporarily squished and compressed.
While they did, Addison noticed that Wei, Wen, Bow and Elder Warrick weren’t here. “Dang...werewolf estrus sure does last a long time. Hopefully the cookies will help her feel a little better.” she thought.
Once they were finishing stretching out, Wanbli beamed, “Morning greetings and salutations Addison and Alpha Wells! Welcome back to Saniukun!”
“Thank you all very much for the warm welcome.” Missy smiled. “But if I may make a request. Please do not wear your clothes on our behalf. Only if you want to. I know that you have decreed that Saniukun is our home as well, but all of you still live here the majority of the time. It wouldn’t sit well with any of us to decrease your comfort level just for our sakes.”
“Granted it’ll take us a while to get used to all the…open-ess, but I swear we will.” Dale added.
The pack couldn’t help smiling at their honest declaration, and the déjà vu of it all. “Heh, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” the present elders thought in regards to Addison completing the respect trial and her own growth in incorporating their werewolf tendencies into her human upbringing.
“Thank you Alpha Wells, we greatly appreciate that. But we’re fine as we are now.” the artistic elder smiled, and the rest of the pack nodded at that.
“Quite. It’s hard to be uncomfortable in something that was custom made for us.” Walden added, earning an affectionate head ruffle from his sunagga.
“Speaking of, our vests are almost done!” Wanda beamed.
“Yeah! Willow, Rwylo and Elder Wanbli said they’ll be ready in eight days!” Trew added.
[That’s awesome! I can’t wait to see what they look like! I’ll call Zoey when we go back to Seabrook to see if she’s able to visit then. If not, you can still count on the NDS.] she assured.
“Thanks Addy.” she smiled, and her team had her legs wrapped up in their arms again.
“Speaking of showing, allow us to give you the grand tour!” Wanbli excitedly proclaimed. “First, we’ll start off with the newest addition to our home.”
Their jaws could’ve hit the ground when he directed their attention to the massive, reinforced mammoth skull that was placed underneath the observation deck; they were currently in the process of building a suitable covering in order to protect it from the elements.
“Oh…my…God.” they breathed out.
[Incredible isn’t it?] Addison knowingly asked, and Missy translated her question.
“T-That’s an understatement.” he replied.
“No kidding! Amazing doesn’t even begin to cut it – especially when all you used were your bare paws to unearth it.” she added.
[Well, werewolves don’t relinquish our prey unless it’s absolutely necessary. Plus, it helped that I’m pretty stubborn.] she grinned, getting a few knowing chuckles from her pack mates. [It truly was a labor of love and connectivity.] she reverently spoke, and her new older brother smiled at her wonderful words.
The Seabrook leaders looked at the main excavator with the matching compass charm as their daughter, and Dale asked, “Setow…right? Sorry, we’re still trying to learn everybody’s names after you all introduced yourselves at the football game.”
“Yes sir.” he confirmed. “And you’re doing just fine.”
”Sho’ are. Just like sugar pup.” Usawa added - garnering small smiles out of them.
“Would it be alright if we touched the fossil?” he asked.
He readily nodded, then naturally added, “Please be careful.”
“Of course. Thank you very much.”
They gingerly touched the massive fossil – marveling at not only its prodigious size, but also the hidden history within it in conjunction with his late brother’s archeological fascination. They turned their attention back towards Addison’s adopted older brother, and leveled a soft smile upon him that spoke volumes. Forgiveness for hurting her, happiness that he was able to escape that stinkin’ thinkin’ haze, and gratitude and joy over being connected to their daughter in such a strong familial bond. They aimed to properly express that and then some to all of them, but they had business to complete first. Nonetheless, Setow instantly understood the initial silent message and matched their grins with his own.
As they resumed their fossil examination, Aerrow whispered, “Heh! They’re behaving like you, Pirrow; not that I blame them.” and everyone fondly nodded at that.
“Did…did you excavate your home, or was this a cave to begin with?” Missy inquired.
“It was initially a shallow opening, and it took many decades to turn it into what you see today.” Worion answered.
“Yeah! So come on in and see!” Wynter eagerly spoke, and grabbed their hands; thankfully she restrained her strength enough not to accidentally dislocate their arms. The pack chuckled at her enthusiasm and followed after them, with Wyatt, Row and Rwylo bringing up the rear by pulling the packed wagons. “Okay, you have to close your eyes.” she instructed, and the Seabrook leaders did just that. They were carefully led to the center of the room, and they could hear all manner of excited giggling. “Alriiight, you can open your eyes!”
If it were possible, their ocular orbs could’ve become as wide as the full moon as they focused on the magnificent interior illuminated by sunlight. Good thing there weren’t any flying insects around, or else they would’ve had easy entrance into their throats due to how wide their mouths were open. “Welcome again to Saniukun!” she beamed – snapping them out of their amazed stupor. It was then they noticed their daughter recording their reaction on her phone.
[C’mon, how could I not? It’s your first visit to Saniukun after all, so I’d say this counts as a special moment!] she answered the question their incredulous looks silently asked.
“Heh, very true. And I know we’d do the same thing if we were able to witness you coming here the first time.” her mother agreed, and they meticulously began looking at all the walls like they were inside an art museum.
“Getting some déjà vu white hair?” Willa knowingly whispered, and her sunagga affectionately nodded at that. It was because of looking at all these incredible images, realizing the rich history behind them, as well as desiring a deeper connection with the pack that spurred her to complete the alpha trials.
[I still can’t believe it’s only been about three moons since I became a Nanukilik werewolf.]
“You and all of us both.” Row remarked.
“And our lives are certainly better because of it.” Setow firmly stated.
“Yeah!” Wylie chimed in, and the pups glomped onto her again.
[Definitely.] Wyatt tenderly agreed.
[Same. I can’t even imagine what my life would be like now without all of you in it. Actually…I can, and I don’t like that scenario whatsoever.] she frowned.
“Tis a good thing that shall never come to pass.” Aerrow replied.
“Mm hm. The only thing you’ll have to look forward to in the immediate future is passing your grand trial, and more marking escapades.” the alpha winked, making her tail uncontrollably spin. Her mini team giggled at her puffed up state, the played an impromptu game of trying to pin her whirling appendage.
They were taken out of their hushed conversations when Missy asked, “Addison, is that you?” while pointing to a group portrait on the wall.
[Yup! That’s the Pilun Akikun! Elder Wanbli, Rwylo and Willow painted it.]
“Wow, it’s amazing!” “Yeah, all of these pictures are just stupendous!” they awed, making the artists merrily “YIP YIP!” Not only voicing their happiness, but no doubt voicing the glee of all the painters that came before them.
“Oo oo! Move the picture, Elder Smithy!” Gnaw requested.
“Move pleez, move pleez!” Nawnu chimed in, and the rest of the pups eagerly voiced their desire to see it come to life.
“Heh, very well.” the chief complied. “Please give me a moment.” and he walked down the corridor. Soon they heard the clack of his cane echoing off the stone interior before he re-entered the main area. “Excuse me, Alpha Wells.” and they moved out of his way.
A long “Wooooooooow!” was drawn out of their vocal chords when he tapped the image with his cane, and the figures started to move. “So THIS is what Elder Walden meant when he said that you have moving pictures inside Saniukun.” Missy recalled. “But…how??”
“Unfortunately this phenomenon doesn’t have a definitive answer, but we theorize that this artifact enables movements to occur.” He took the well-preserved fang out of his necklace and showed it to them.
“W-What is that?” she asked.
“This is the Salukik Fang.” he replied, and proceeded to explain its significance and the power stored within. “Therefore, we believe that the artists’ energy are stored within these images – allowing the Salukik Fang to resonate with the imparted memories and bringing them to life.” he finished.
Once they absorbed the incredible and sacred information, Dale then inquired, “I understand needing the fang and your cane to animate older images, but why didn’t Team Run B&B ask Rwylo, Willow or Elder Wanbli to move this one since they imparted their memories and essence into it?”
Wanbli chuckled and replied, “Your daughter made the exact same observation. Strangely enough, it doesn’t respond to our moonstones.” They demonstrated that statement by pressing their necklaces against other portraits that they’ve done, but nothing occurred.
“As I said, the mysteries surrounding the Salukik Fang are limitless.” Worion reiterated.
“And we swear that they’ll remain as such to the rest of the world.” the mayor swore – garnering grateful nods from the elders.
“Y’know, there’s one mystery we could try solving.” Kraw spoke.
“What’s that, lil’ cuz?” DJ asked.
“Let’s see if Addy can move the pictures with her staff.”
“Yeah! Didja bring it, Addy?” Wylan asked.
[I did, but I’ll try doing it later once we’re done showing my parents around our second home, and signing all the paperwork. Is that alright?] she asked, and her team readily agreed to those conditions.
“C’mon Dale and lil’ Missy, there’s still plenty more to show ya.” Usawa beamed.
“Yup! Prepare to be continually impressed!” Wynter chimed in.
“Heh, at least our jaws will get a nice stretch session.” Dale chuckled, and followed the pack for the in depth tour. It was honestly miraculous their faces weren’t in a permanent state of shock after they were shown every conceivable thing.
“Sooo? What do you think?” she knowingly asked.
“Just…wow.” Missy breathed out.
“D-Ditto that.” Dale concurred. “Sorry, but that’s honestly all we got.”
Everyone fondly laughed at their reaction, and Addison remarked, [It’s all good! That’s pretty much all I’ve been able to say since I became a Nanukilik werewolf too!]
“Yup! You Wells are all cut from the same cloth!” DJ grinned.
Missy smiled and replied, “I’m glad we’re all on one accord in that regard. Now then, please give us a moment to set up our gear in the main area and we’ll get started. Addison, you and Row should start cooking up the rice so it can be ready for dinner tonight. I know it’ll take a while to cook that entire bag.”
[Good idea. Is that alright Row?]
“Sure is; the heat slab is already warmed up.” he replied.
“Is there anything we can do to help, Sun Cuz?” Wylie asked.
[Sure. Would you all mind gathering a lot of water please?]
“Got it, boss! C’mon guys!” Wylan eagerly barked, and they led the two chefs down the corridor to the kitchen. Soon each pup was carrying a bucket filled with water, while Row carried the large cooking pot above his head. Addison grabbed the twenty pound rice bag, salt shaker and measuring cups out of the wagon, then followed them outside to the punnivik. Curiosity overtook Willow, Rwylo, Wynter, Warren, Willa, Setow and Wyatt, and they went outside to see the rice cooking process.
Meanwhile, everyone else watched with rapt fascination as Missy and Dale set up their equipment while patiently answering any questions anyone had – mainly from Pirrow; luckily Aerrow prevented her from going into full-on “ilichuk mode”.
“And that’ll do it.” Missy voiced as she finished hooking up the drone to the monitor. “Once Addison and the others are done we’ll get started.”
[We’re done!] they heard their daughter proclaim.
“Really? Wow, the water boiled that fast?” she asked.
[Yup. That heat slab is like our stove top kicked up like ten notches.] she described.
“…Will the rice be okay though? Can the heat be controlled so it simmers?”
“Don’t worry, Row’s a pro. He’s got the rice cooking perfectly.” Willa assured, making him bashfully “YIP YIP!”
[And I set a timer on my phone too.] Addison assured.
“Yup! It’ll all be ready for Sun Cuz’s celebration feast!” Wylie proclaimed.
“Sounds good to us…though I may need to up my clothing size with all this good food we’re eating.” Dale remarked.
[Or you can join me in grand trial training. That’ll burn off some calories.]
Once Missy translated what she said, he chuckled and replied, “Heh. I’ll leave that to you and your pack mates, kiddo. I’ve learned my lesson.”
“Finally, thank god!” his wife thought, then asked, “Speaking of pack mates, where’s Elder Warrick? And unless my counting is off…I think we’re missing three.”
“Your counting is correct, Missy. Elder Warrick is currently with Bow, Wei and Wen over at Gichiv Grove.” Worion answered. “We’ll inform them about everything we’re about to discuss.”
“Are they alright? We remember you saying that Bow was temporarily incapacitated.”
“They’re alright; Bow’s just goin’ through her estrus, that’s all. No need to fret none.” Big Mama explained.
The Seabrook leaders discreetly glanced at Wyatt before the mayor replied, “Understood. Then let’s get started. Please make yourselves comfortable; we’ll try to make this as quick as possible, but there’s still a lot to cover and review. In fact, Addison? Perhaps you should take Team Run B&B outside to play; while all of this is important, it’s still pretty boring for young children.”
“Good idea, Alpha Wells.” Willa agreed – knowing good and well how restless they could get. “Pups, you’re in charge of training white hair today.”
“Really!?” they beamed.
“Yup. Put her through the ringer.” she grinned.
“Okay alpha!” they eagerly agreed, then ran into the treasure room to grab some of the gifted tennis balls and chew toys. They then filled a leather satchel with water skins and dried meat. “C’mon Sun Cuz!” Wylie encouraged. Gnaw and Nawnu grabbed her paws and all but dragged her out of the den.
Everyone chuckled at their sudden departure, then turned their attention back to the Seabrook leaders. Dale turned on the drone, and activated its video replay on the monitor. “What all of you are about to see is the entirety of Elder Usawa’s estate.” Missy spoke, and all of them were completely enthralled by the sheer size of the parcel.
“They…they really left all of t-this for us…f-for me.” she quietly awed, and wiped away the budding tears in her eyes.
“They sure did, my love. They sure did.” Smithy smiled, then brought her in for a side hug and kissed the top of her forehead.
“As stated in the will, the area totals fifty acres. Additionally, there is an underground well so you’ll have your own-”
“Our own.” she corrected.
She smiled and corrected, “Our own water source. Granted all of you are used to drinking water straight from the source, but we’ll need to place purifying filters in order for our bodies to handle it.” Soon the surveying video showed the immense yet dilapidated mansion, as well as two equally massive, yet broken down barns.
“T-That’s where Annabelle and Suzette used to live?” she marveled - picturing her father briefly staying inside at their insistence. All while being surrounded by their love and gratitude.
“Mm hm. I wish I could’ve seen these structures in their heyday; I’m positive they were simply immaculate given their wealth. But as you all can see…they’re unfortunately unfit to live in. Also…I grossly underestimated the decay they suffered. I was hoping that the foundation would be at least be intact given the high quality of building materials…but weather, insect infestation and time still has an unbeaten track record against modern architecture without proper upkeep. Even so, most of the bricks and wood are still intact. They can be reused to build some of your new Seabrook homes, as well as storage areas for your farming supplies or any other various items. And given what we’ve just saw in our second home, I know all of you can prove the pups’ statement of building houses undeniably true.”
Smithy chuckled and replied, “Perhaps we can lend a hand to the suitable architects you choose.”
“We’ll begin interviewing all prospects, and obtaining building permits right away. But first, these belong to you Elder Usawa.” Missy smiled and presented her with a pair of weathered yet solid copper-colored keys.
“Thank you kindly Dale and lil’ Missy.” Usawa gratefully smiled.
“Now comes one the boring parts. We’ll need to sign the deed – confirming that we’re added as joint owners of your estate. Good thing is we can record all of this taking place without having to go to Mr. Watterson’s office.”
“And don’t worry, I’ll only record you signing the papers. That’s it.” Dale swore.
“Additionally, everyone will need to write their name on these addendum documents.”
“Addendum documents?” the pack repeated.
“It’s a precursor to a will. Should anything happen to Elder Usawa or us, the estate will still rightfully belong to the pack and its many descendants.” she explained.
“Many descendants is right.” Walden internally smiled as he thought about the latest additions to his family line via mate-ship, and the numerous mini rambunctious blessings that would come forth from their unions when the time was right.
“I’ll have Addison and the pups sign these when they come back from their training exercises. Also, could you let us know when Bow’s estrus is done so we can come back and add her, Elder Warrick, Wei and Wen?”
“Will do.” Willa swore.
“Do we need to sign in English, or can we sign in our own language?” Wanbli asked. “Mind you we place our hand print next to our names.”
“Perfect! An exquisite display of your rich culture while simultaneously preventing anyone from trying to copy it.” the mayor replied without missing a beat. “In fact…would it be alright if we did that too?”
“Of course! You two are part of the pack after all!” he granted, planting small, appreciative smiles on their faces. It was still so surreal that they were welcomed into their culture, but they would have to be dragged through ten active volcanoes before they’d even think squandering the trust they placed in them.
“There have been forgery instances?” Walden inquired.
“Not within Mr. Watterson’s company, but it is prevalent throughout the country. That’s why we’ll be signing three copies – one for us, one to keep here in Saniukun, and one for Mr. Watterson’s office. I have an extra metal briefcase to place your copy in so it’ll be preserved.”
“Thank y’all kindly.” Big Mama smiled. “Hey Rwy-sky? Mind fetchin’ some markin’ paint please?”
The young artist ran down the corridor and retrieved a medium sized jar of the requested item, as well as a paintbrush. Wyatt went into the sleeping area to shift back into his balanced form and get dressed, then lined up alongside the rest of his pack mates to the table to sign papers.
As they did, Willie remarked, “Y’know, this is kinda similar to the census logs Alpha Atanew took.”
“Aye, you’re right.” Aerrow voiced everyone’s concurrent thoughts.
Pirrow temporarily took over recording duties so the Seabrook leaders could sign their names and stamp their hand prints next to their signatures. Once they were done, the young researcher stopped recording and handed the phone back to the mayor. "Thank you Pirrow." Missy lauded. “Y’know…if I didn’t know better, I’d think I was looking at a collection of ancient scrolls. Your runes are just…wow.”
Everyone still affectionately chuckled at the simple yet fond adjective the Wells commonly used, and Willa replied, “Wow still works for us.”
“I’m glad.” she smiled.
“Is there anything else we need to sign?” Walden asked.
“Yes. There’s one more important matter to discuss, so please don’t wash the ink off just yet. …Though I apologize in advance for my forwardness with the proposal.”
“Well, we know that you two aren’t going to endanger us, so there’s no reason for your apology.” he replied. His sealing vouch meant a lot to the Seabrook leaders. “Please, proceed.”
“Yup, go on ahead now.” Big Mama knowingly smiled.
Before she did, the pack’s ears perked up to a faint howl. “Rice is ready.” Row reported. “Warren? Mind helping me bring the pot inside?”
“Yup!”
“Thank you, we’ll be right back.” They went into the kitchen to grab mini pelts in order to protect their hands, then left the den. A few minutes later they returned with the filled, massive pot.
“Good lord! It’d take six people to try and lift that; they’re not even breaking a sweat!” Dale thought as everyone watched them carry it down the corridor.
“Thanks for waiting.” the chef spoke as they rejoined the group.
“Not at all. We can’t wait to try your exceptional cooking tonight.” Missy smiled, making him bashfully “YIP YIP!” “Now then, Amartiwok Woods is a state forest – meaning that while it is protected under Washington State and Seabrook forestry laws, it is open to the public for camping, hiking, hunting and other outdoor activities. Additionally, raw materials such as timber and minerals are permitted to be extracted from designated areas. However, I proposed and received the necessary votes within the council to shift it from being a state forest to being the Nanukilik Reservation. As a reservation, you would no longer be up under Washington State and Seabrook laws. Instead, it will be permanently stated that the Nanukilik Pack has absolute jurisdiction in their designated territories, and are responsible for protecting the land.”
“In other words, returning most of what our ancestors originally claimed within human jurisdiction.” Walden surmised.
“Correct. But we’ll still provide emergency assistance in the event of natural disasters. Additionally, you still have the option of allowing various outdoor activities and raw material extraction to continue. Here’s the full list for all of you to review.”
Willa took the helm and read off everything that had been occurring in their territory since Aaron's and Gabrielle's protective false flora claims faded away. Once she was done, Missy resumed, “Should you allow those activities to continue, the money generated through entrance and extraction fees will go the Nanukilik treasury as opposed to Seabrook’s treasury. However, the pack will be responsible for maintaining all outdoor activity sites, hiking trails and overseeing the extraction process instead of state/city appointed employees.”
“So…we’d be cleaning rooks?” the alpha surmised.
The mayor thought about it for a moment, then confirmed, “That’s an accurate description, yes.”
Willa’s face as well as the rest of her peers displayed they weren’t too keen on that idea.
“Or a third option is you can create a joint partnership with Seabrook where the employees would still continue maintaining whatever activities you decide to allow, but only half of the profits would go into your treasury. But regardless of your decision, your territory will officially be considered a separate nation where your rules and regulations reign. Well…unless of course you decide to keep things the way they are now.”
“No.” was the immediate reply to that option.
“Glad to hear.” she smiled. “There is also another method of obtaining funds, though it is a bit lengthy. As your rook, I can apply to the federal government for you to be a recognized tribe within the entire United States. With that, you’ll be able to receive funding for housing, health care and education on your territory. However…that does make your species known to the rest of world. Though…I suppose that’ll occur regardless once you’re accepted into a university or any human occupation. I can also apply to have all of you be recognized as an endangered species to further bolster the defense of your territory. I understand that this is an important decision. Please take all the time you need to deliberate, then let Addison know so we can return with the paperwork to sign.”
“Alpha Missy Wells. Alpha Dale Wells.” the chief suddenly spoke, and stood up. “Thank you. Thank you for all that you’ve done to protect our home within the parameters of human laws. Even though you just said that it was majority council vote, we know that you got the wheel rolling so to speak and persistently kept at it in order for them to agree. To be honest, we’ve dreamed of something like this happening. But now it’s a reality. We appreciate all that you two have done for us.” he lauded, then proceeded to take off his upper garments. The rest of the pack followed suit, then reverently bowed their heads before them.
Though the urge to shield their eyes rose up within them, it was immediately squashed in the face of this sincere expression of trust and gratitude. “Well, Addison does get her stubbornness from us.” Dale chuckled. “Still, I believe that’s our line.” and that caused everyone to lift their heads. The Seabrook leaders bowed their heads before them and he expounded, “Thank you for giving us the opportunity to right egregious wrongs. Those from the past, and ones that we’ve personally committed. You could’ve easily shut us out or rightfully attacked us, but you opened your hearts to us – especially our daughter. Even when our tenures are over, we’ll continue to advocate and ensure our family’s continued safety within human laws. We give you our word.”
When they raised their heads, they saw prominent smiles on everyone’s lips.
“We know y’all will.” Usawa softly replied - garnering matching grins out of them.
“Now then, in regards to discussing what to allow within our territory, I assure you this won’t take long.” Worion assured.
“Indeed. As our chief stated, we’ve dreamed of this situation. Needless to say we’ve had plenty of conversations of what we would hypothetically do.” Wanbli added, and they began their deliberation.
The Seabrook leaders watched them discuss important points and take multiple votes until a consensus was reached.
The young alpha stepped forward and stated, “Alpha Wells. We’ve decided to create a joint partnership with Seabrook, and allow humans to continue camping and hiking within designated areas of our territory. Just like we’re experiencing your town, we want humans to experience our home and hopefully in turn inspire them to take care of the environment. Plus we’ll need the money in order to buy baking ingredients, as well as fund further education should we decide and be accepted into college. We can’t expect humans to keep losing money. But that’s those are the only activities we’re allowing; nothing else.”
“Especially fishing and hunting.” Wynter added.
“Mm hm. We along with other predators need prey to survive; it isn’t something to do for sport. If any deer or caribou wander into Seabrook, then by all means humans can eat them.”
“That…and the fact that we don’t to risk getting shot at.” Setow chimed in.
Horrified **GASPS** erupted out of their mouths as Elder Walden’s gruesome encounter immediately came to the forefront of their minds. Even though some knew and accepted their daughter’s lycanthrope form, it was still a ferocious, frightening sight if they were defending their territory or themselves. Even the way they communicated in that form could be misconstrued as a threatening posture – leading to a dangerous face-off.
“I will ensure that those are the only permitted activities to occur within your territory.” Missy wholeheartedly swore. “And…what of being a recognized tribe and endangered species?"
”For now, we’d prefer to limit the knowledge of our existence to Seabrook and Washington state. In the short time we were in school, we learned some of the horrible things humans have done to one another when conquering other territories. …Though I guess that’s no different than what those stupid coyotes tried to do. Not to say we’re afraid of humans, but we’d rather not risk the possibility of having to fight them on a large scale.”
“We completely understand.”
”But…if you could have that application on standby when we are ready to apply, that’d be great.”
”Of course! And with your permission, I can also oversee the deposit of all generated funds into your account and give you monthly statements."
"In other words, be our money rooks too?" the young alpha surmised.
"That is correct. Until someone from the pack decides to take on this responsibility."
"...Are you sure about this lil' Missy? You and Dale are already doin' so much with our estate, and now formin' the Nanukilik Reservation." Usawa worriedly voiced.
Missy smiled and replied, "I appreciate your concern, but I swear I'll be alright. Besides, I pretty much handle all treasury duties anyway. This'll be nothing."
"Then we accept your offer. Thank ya kindly."
"And for the record, you, Dale and Addison are able to utilize any funds you require." Worion added.
"Indeed. After all, as we've stated numerous times, you are part of the Nanukilik pack." Wanbli smiled.
"Thank you so much." Dale lauded. "We promise to inform you if we make any withdrawal."
"Mm hm!" his wife concurred, then pulled up a map of Amartiwok Woods on the monitor. “Now in regards to the camp sites and hiking trails, are you all okay with where they currently are? Or do some need to be shut down?” They meticulously looked through the map, and chose which camp sites and trails could remain. “Got it. And what is your decision on the extraction of raw materials?”
“Timber will be the only thing taken out of our territory; we’ll show and oversee which trees can be cut down. Afterwards, we’ll handle planting new seeds.” the young leader replied.
“Understood. We just need another round of signatures notarizing these activities, as well as adding your own laws that’ll need to be given to our citizens.” The put their upper garments back on so they could be recorded signing the next triple set of paperwork. “Alright, the only thing left to do is to go over Seabrook’s laws, and sign that you comprehend them. …This might take a while.”
“It’s all good, Alpha Wells. We have plenty of time.” Wanbli assured as he clutched his moonstone necklace.
“That we do.” Worion smiled.
The Seabrook leaders heard the unspoken gratitude towards their daughter, and smiled back. “Then let’s get started.”
The wind brought along white, fluffy caravans as the sun traveled well past the noonday position before they completed the lecture, signed the paperwork and washed the marking paint off of their hands.
“**phew** And that’s all we have.” Dale announced. “Thank you again for bearing with us while we went over the laws.”
“Think nothing of it, Alpha Wells.” Wanbli replied.
“Though I must say that some of them are a bit…absurd.” Walden commented.
“No kidding! Like “No citizen is allowed to wear green on the second Tuesday of every month?” and “Milk consumption can only occur before 9 a.m., and after 5p.m.?” Wynter repeated.
“Yes, I agree. I’m sure there was some meaning to them at the time, but I’ll definitely schedule a meeting with the council and P.A.D to eliminate some of these laws.” Missy replied. “But we’ve kept all of you long enough. Please enjoy the rest of your day.”
“Speaking of, I wonder if Addison and the pups are still going strong. We’ve been talking for a few hours.” the P.A.D chief commented.
“Hold on, let me check.” Willa spoke, and her moonstone suddenly glowed with a purple light. “Heh, yup. She’s still going strong. The pups doing ambush attacks and throwing tennis balls as an added distraction.”
“Yeeahh…I’d be black and blue all over.” he shuddered.
“I’m glad you realize that.” his wife concurred. “But that’s amazing how you’re able to communicate with one another through your moonstones.”
“Ehhh…it’s more like our guardians are communicating on our behalf. We didn’t even know it was a possibility until my sunagga and brother accepted each other as mates.” she disclosed.
“Ahh, that’s right. Addison told us about that unique chase game.” the mayor recalled, inadvertently making Wyatt’s tail nervously twitch momentarily. “So you can only do that with those that have connected with their guardians?”
“Yes and no. Everyone has a connection with their guardians – whether or not they’re able to hear them. Those that have made a vocal connection are able to communicate with more coherent words through our moonstones, whereas those who haven’t yet can only glean feelings from each other.” Worion explained.
“That’s still incredible.” she marveled.
“Sho’ is.” Usawa agreed.
“Willa? Would you mind letting her know that once they’re done sparring that they’ll need to sign the paperwork? It’ll be faster than us trying to get a signal on our phones atop the observation deck, and we certainly don’t want to howl anymore curse words.”
“Then how about we give y’all your first lesson?” she grinned.
The Seabrook leaders warily looked at each other, but agreed to her suggestion. They were going to need to learn someday, so why not start now?
Wanbli eagerly clapped his hands and explained, “Alrighty then Alpha Wells, the trick is to expand your core with air, but not fully, so you’re still able to slightly breathe through your nose. You don’t want to merely release it like those balloons at that wonderful football celebration you two organized. Now as far as howling, think of it as whistling a tune. The different pitches will convey your message. Granted that’s easier said than done, but with diligent practice you’ll be able to develop your vocal chords and surrounding muscles and howl just like us. First, let’s start with “Welcome.” Please follow my lead.” He cleared his throat, took a short breath to slightly expand his core, and howled, “A-WOOO!”
Missy and Dale heeded his instructions and followed suit with their own, “A-WOOO!”
They heard a few snickers coming from the teens before they quieted down out of respect for their new rooks. “Heh, just like Addison.” they concurrently thought as Wanbli encouraged, “You’re on the right trail. Give it another go, but open your mouth a little bit more.”
They heeded his suggestion and tried again, but the teens’ concealed smiles underneath their hands indicated that they were once again incorrect.
“Hmmm…may I try something?” he asked as he gestured to their heads. They readily granted him permission for whatever he need to do. He tilted their chins up a little bit more and said, “Alright, try it once more. Remember, don’t force the air out too hard.”
They filled their lungs once again, and added a more delicate touch as their “A-WOOO!” left their lips. Though the **GASP** that left everyone’s lips didn’t sound like a…favorable one.
“Yup, definitely just like Addison.” they mentally chuckled.
“…Not good?” Dale hesitantly guessed.
“Well…at least y’all are set to chew someone out if they make y’all mad.” Usawa offered. “But the fact that you two are learnin’ our language is all good in our eyes.”
“Indeed.” Wanbli smiled, placing matching smiles on their own faces.
“Thank you. We’ll keep at it.” Missy vowed.
“I know you will.” Walden grinned. “Beta, please relay their message to Addison and the pups by howling. Alpha Wells, please observe.”
They watched their daughter’s mate fill his core with air, tilt his head back and belt out “HHRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” A moment later the pack’s ears perk up to her reply. “She said it’ll be a while; her team is going to have her do tracking training after ambush training.” he explained.
“Sound kind of like hide-n-seek.” the mayor remarked.
“Yeah, that’s basically it.” Wynter confirmed.
“I still can’t believe you’re able to communicate all that through just one sustained note.” the P.A.D chief awed.
“Mm hm! Still…it’s odd. I’m able to understand your pack’s language…yet I can’t speak it.”
“Addison was the same way until she transformed.” Willa voiced.
“Ahh yes, that’s right. That’s because her and Adelio were gradually getting in synch despite the depleted energy.” she recalled, and gazed upon everyone’s necklaces again. “…No. Nothing happened with the necklace then, so why would it now? But still…”
She was taken out of her theorizing when Usawa asked, “So, y’all up for a lil’ stroll around your territory?”
“If you don’t mind it being a slow stroll; we may work out, but I doubt we’ll be able to keep up with you.” Dale replied.
“Heh, don’t sell yourself short; y’all may surprise yourselves. And it doesn’t matter if we’re goin’ fast or slow, so long as we get where we need to go.”
“Heh, true.” he agreed. “Just give us a sec to pack all our gear, get our water bottles and we’ll be on our way.”
“Umm…Big Mama? Would it be alright if I showed them around some of our territory?” Wyatt requested.
Everyone noticed the hunter gleam in his eyes – he was set on a target, and he aimed to catch it.
She smiled and granted, “Fine by me, Cotton Tail. Go on ahead an’ show’em a good time.”
“I will.” he swore.
