Summary:

"i've been on my own now for way too long, you've been tryna talk to me to give me the truth, now I'm finally ready to let you"

Notes:

Merry Christmas friends! Happy holidays to all! Here's an angst/fluff chapter! I wrote half of this in 2024 and the other half tonight lol

Thank you for all the love and support on this story, I haven't forgotten you all, just been having a slow time writing lately <3

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

You are all standing around the center console of the bridge once again, and you’re on the brink of another panic attack.

The Jedi Council wants you and Obi-Wan to go on another mission, regardless of the fact that Anakin still hasn’t been found or heard from. You stay quiet, trying to do all the meditations that you can so that you don’t break into another anxious episode like you had the day previous.

You don’t know what is going to come up on this mission, but apparently you’re supposed to track down Dooku in some capacity and destroy a droid encampment outside of a populated city on this planet.

It sounds like another tedious mission—Dooku most likely won’t be there—and you would much rather be looking for Anakin.

Obi-Wan seems to think the same, but for some reason he holds his tongue. Maybe that’s his maturity showing, or maybe he’s too lost in thought to really hear what is being said anymore.

Eventually the meeting ends, and it’s not long before the navigator, Quail, puts the ship into hyperdrive.

Obi-Wan stands at the helm of the ship, staring out into the swirling blue lights of hyperspace with his hands clasped behind his back. You decide to sit down and try a meditation for awhile since the light of hyperspace is actually really bright and kinda makes you dizzy and you have no idea how Obi-Wan can stare at it for so long.

Your meditation turns into an uncomfortable nap, and before you know it, you’re there.

This planet is more green, although there are more cities here than the planet previous. You are to meet the senators discreetly in a forest outside the city, and something about this part of the plan seems off to you. You don’t need the Force to know that these senators sound sketchy.

“Why would they want to meet away from the city, though?” you ask Cody.

“This planet is supposedly neutral, but they said they fear retaliation from the Separatists in the area if they’re found meeting with the Republic.”

“They have Separatists on world and no ties to the Republic… I don’t know, this all seems sketchy to me. Odds are that the meeting place is actually right by the Separatist encampment and it ends up being a trap.”

Cody grimaces and pauses for a moment, then extends his hand to you. You look at him, confused, until he speaks.

“I’ll take that bet.”

You huff a laugh, and shake his hand.

Obviously it would be pretty terrible if there was an ambush on Obi-Wan and the clones. However, Obi-Wan—more so than any other person—has main-character plot-armor, so you’re banking on that to protect him. You have to believe that because the alternative is way too scary, and you can only deal with losing one of your friends at the moment.

(Your thoughts drift back to Anakin, and you find yourself praying that he is okay.)

Obi-Wan and Cody and a small squadron of clones take a gunship down to the surface, and your stomach churns with anticipation as you help monitor comms from the venator. You wish you could go down there with them, but after the last mission it makes more sense for you to be somewhere you wouldn’t get in trouble.

Well, according to Cody, there wouldn’t be any trouble this go-around. It’s not like you have anything to give him if he wins the bet, but it’s fun to pretend.

The meeting with the senators sounds fine, and a couple of them actually sound concerned about the rising tensions in their city and on their planet. There’s one senator who sounds super shady, and from what you can hear it seems Obi-Wan picks up on it. You can hear the situation escalate when the odd senator pulls out a blaster and attempts to shoot his compatriots and then the squad.

Obi-Wan must use the Force to steal the blaster, but there isn’t much of a resolution to the problem since a small squad of battle droids shows up and shoots at everyone, including the “loyal” senator.

Well, seems like you won the bet…unfortunately.

Obi-Wan does a cool backflip to detain the Separatist senator whilst deflecting blaster bolts in every direction. He really is the OG badass.

The squad makes quick work of the battle droids but most of the senators are injured so Obi-Wan and Cody have to take them onto the venator and have their wounds treated. He talks with them after that, asking them questions to make sure that they aren’t secretly Separatists. They aren’t.

The next step is to send in an infiltration squad to the heart of the city to do… something. You aren’t really paying attention at this point because you’re focused on a scorch mark on Obi-Wan’s robes on his left arm. He’s in the middle of giving orders when you approach him to make sure his arm is okay. You lightly touch his shoulder and he hisses, snapping his attention to you. He’d been so engrossed in the battle plans that he didn’t even notice you or his injury most likely.

You cross your arms and raise your eyebrows. “You need to get this checked out,” you say sternly.

Obi-Wan presses his lips into a thin line, and you might be imagining it but it looks like he is blushing a little. “I will, once our assault is planned.”

“There won’t be an assault if you can’t move your arm, Kenobi,” you say flatly. You don’t usually call him that, but he’s acting like an idiot—not caring for his own wellbeing—so it warrants a last-name call out. “You need to get this wrapped up or something.”

He pauses, then says, “No.”

Obi-Wan almost flinches as soon as he says it.

“No?” you repeat. He doesn’t look too confident in his answer now. “This is not the time to say ‘no’ to getting medical attention, sir! I will drag your ass down there myself, none of your Force fuckery is going to work—”

From the corner of your eye, you can see Cody and some others stifling laughs. Obi-Wan seems to notice as well, and waves away the troopers he was briefing. He hangs his head and sighs, letting you tug on his good arm and lead him to the infirmary level of the ship.

Humor aside, you both know the real reason why you are so angry right now—it’s because you’re afraid, and Obi-Wan acted without regard of that fear. You’ve lost Anakin and God knows where he went, if he is hurt, if he needs help, if he’s dying alone somewhere. And here Obi-Wan is getting hurt in front of your face and doing nothing about it. It’s driving you insane.

And you don’t like to make a scene or call out people like that—it makes you feel seen in a way that curdles your stomach. You’re about to apologize when Obi-Wan speaks first.

“I know,” he says quietly as you both approach the infirmary wing. “And I’m sorry.”

“Please don’t apologize when I’m the one who scolded you.”

He huffs a tired laugh. “I don’t think I’ve been scolded like that since before I became Qui-Gon’s padawan. Or at least I never paid attention when he did.”

You tilt your head to look at him. “That tracks.”

You both laugh.

Obi-Wan gets his arm treated for a blaster bolt burn, nothing too deep or serious, and you feel like you can finally take a deep breath again. You sit there together for a bit, and one of the medics brings Obi-Wan tea and his face lights up in a way you haven’t seen since Anakin went missing. It makes you smile.

“I know he’s still alive,” Obi-Wan says suddenly. “Anakin, I mean. I can feel him in our bond. He’s determined, but lonely.”

Your heart sinks at that. What makes it worse is Obi-Wan’s face as he says this—it’s pure anguish. You’re reminded that as much as you love Anakin, Obi-Wan will always have loved him first, most, and last. This must be more anxiety-inducing for him than anyone, even you. It’s just the way that he presents it is unknown to you—or it was, until now. He likes to be on the move just as much as Anakin, if not more. He doesn’t like to stop and think when he’s hurting. If he does, it all hurts too much.

It’s what makes his time on Tatooine after Episode III so heartbreaking.

But that won’t happen. You’ll make sure of it.

“He’s alive though, right?” you ask.

He wipes away an errant tear and nods fervently, exhaling deeply. “He’s alive, and we will find him.”

You hold his hand to offer comfort, and as soon as you do he gets a comm message from Cody.

“General, Commander, we have an incoming call from Coruscant—it’s the Jedi Council. You’re needed on the bridge.” Obi-Wan nods and is about to turn off his comm when Cody adds, “Commander, also, you lost the bet. Which means…”

You groan. “Alright Cody, fine, you get a song on the playlist.”

Notes:

I'm definitely in my Obi-Wan era rn, depresso but with some espresso.

Anyway hope the holidays have been good to everyone and happy new year!
