    Omori Kai Kaguya Shizukō is from nowhere—nowhere that exists anymore. Her name, the clothes on her back; the skills they beat into her... none of it belongs to her. She’s just a ripple on water cast by a stone thrown by someone else’s hand, destined to disappear in the wake of the next stone.

    She’s not even the fish chasing the ripple.

    Sometimes, Kai feels like a snail without its shell, or maybe a shell without its snail. Sometimes she feels like an important piece of her is missing–a piece of herself she’s never getting back because it just doesn’t exist anymore.

    And Sometimes Kai feels like a hermit crab wearing a too-small shell, squishing herself inside to protect her soft and vulnerable (and so tasty…) belly. She’s not really missing anything; she’s just waiting for a bigger shell to move into.

    (But, when the time comes, can she really let go of her old shell?)
