Chapter Text
The University of Kansas was a lot fancier than Dean remembered from when his class visited the place in high school. There was a big, white building at the front with cream-colored statues and a small fountain by the main entrance. Going to college always seemed like something out of a dream, but he was finally here. The scholarship committee was kind enough to let him postpone college for two years until his home situation improved and it luckily did. Well, it didn’t have anything to do with luck at all. It was all the work Dean put in. He worked full time at a coffee shop down the street from his house and part-time at his uncle’s mechanic shop. Dean wouldn’t lie, it was tough as hell and there were multiple occasions where he wanted to quit and give up. To be honest, if he was doing it for himself, he probably would have given up a long time ago. However, every time Dean got sick of running around working ten hours every day, he saw those stupid puppy dog eyes Sam would sport at him.
Sam is his little brother, four years younger than Dean. He is annoyingly smart, kind and has the biggest bitch face Dean’s ever seen. The brothers have always been extremely close, and at a point in their life, they were all they had. Their mother passed away when Dean was five years old, and since then everything changed. When Sam turned ten years and had his birthday party completely ruined by their dad’s drunk antics, Dean promised himself he would get Sam away from there. Luckily, their dad had a brother named Bobby who more than once offered to let Dean and Sam sleep over. Those sleepovers are some of Dean’s fondest memories. Currently, Sam was in high school acing everything that came his way and he loved to come home and gush about all his accomplishments to Dean. Dean truly loved that kid to death, and he could finally rest peacefully at night, knowing Sam was somewhere safe.
Truth be told, Dean was shitting himself standing outside the main building. He was twenty years old and was just starting college. It was a little embarrassing to be a little behind other people his age. Students walking past him were eyeing him curiously and some even checked him out. Of course, Dean only thought they were seizing him up. He stood out even more, as he was starting in October and not in August when all the other new students arrived. Some business had to be taken care of before Dean could properly start and here he was. Grabbing the hem of his grey hoodie nervously, Dean stepped inside to register himself.
Castiel Novak was not like the rest of his family. They were all in their own way, loud and outgoing. A trait he currently found himself jealous of as he saw the poor guy walking around in circles with a sheet of paper in his hand and a bag in the other. There was no doubt he was looking for his next class and he was visibly struggling. Castiel found the man quite endearing. He was wearing a grey hoodie with a AC/DC shirt underneath and dark blue denims. Even though he was a good 30 feet away from him, Castiel could spot a few freckles on him that matched his dark blonde hair perfectly. If he wasn’t holding a map over the school grounds, Castiel would be convinced the guy was a model or something. He was currently sitting at one of the benches outside the cafeteria, sketching a building for one of his classes.
Castiel looked down at what he was wearing and quickly decided he did not look like someone the guy would talk to. Castiel was wearing his black jeans with a dark brown sweater paired with his beloved leather jacket. The piercings in his ears and lip combined with his dark messy hair would probably scare the poor guy away. He looked lost enough already.
Then Castiel spotted Crowley, a horrid business student known for using people until he was done with them, walking towards the unfairly good-looking new guy. Without even looking at him, Crowley walked past him and pushed him slightly with his elbow, making the guy drop his backpack resulting in a lot of stuff falling out. Before he even realized what he was doing, Castiel found himself walking towards the guy, feeling sorry for him. Crowley was long gone before he reached him, and the guy was crawling around on the ground picking up his pencils and sheets.
“Hello” Castiel spoke, once he found himself standing in front of the man. Forrest-green eyes met Castiel, and he had to take a step back from the beauty that was crawling in front of him. “Oh. Hey!” the guy replied, smiling at him before continuing gathering his stuff. “Do .. Do you require assistance?” Castiel asked and immediately cringed at himself. Who talks like that? The laughter his vocabulary erupted from the man however, made it worth it. “I don’t know man, are you offering?” the guy questioned with a cheeky grin, obviously amused. “Yes” Castiel managed to cough out, suddenly feeling shy with all the attention on him. Without waiting for a reply, Castiel silently crouched down and started gathering the stuff the other man hadn’t picked up yet. Their eyes met several times, but Castiel quickly looked away every time. Once everything was back in the guy’s bag, they stood up and good-looking guy reached out his hand to Castiel. “Thanks for helping! My name is Dean” he grinned. Castiel felt his cheeks flush as he took Dean’s hand and shook it slightly. “No problem. I’m Castiel”.
“Castiel? What a uniqe name! That’s really pretty” Dean smiled, releasing his hand and letting it rest on the strap of his backpack. “Oh, thank you” Castiel answered, wanting to look away from Dean’s blinding smile but finding himself unable to. “Are you named after the angel? I think angels are so cool, except the ones who aren’t of course, and I don’t think they are as cool as werewolves you know? Although if I had to pick a favorite supernatural creature, it would probably be angels. What’s yours?” Dean asked excitedly, making Castiel flustered by his sudden outburst. “Uhm … what’s what?” Castiel questioned, cocking his head slightly to the side. “What is your favorite supernatural creature?” the blonde repeated, not at all bothered by Castiel’s confusion. “Oh, I don’t really know, I haven’t thought about it before. Definitely not angels though” he said, trying his best to smile at Dean. Before Dean got the chance to react however, a loud “DEAN!” could be heard over the courtyard. Both boys turned at the voice and saw a red-haired girl waving happily to Dean, jumping up and down. Said man turned back to Castiel with an apologetic smile. “That’s the one person I know here, Charlie. We were gonna meet up, so I’ll have to go, but don’t think I’m giving up on finding out what your answer is” Dean said, winking at Castiel at the last part. Castiel didn’t get the opportunity to reply, before Dean was off jogging towards his friend. Well, now you know two people here Castiel thought to himself, smiling and feeling proud of himself for daring to talk to a new person.
