Summary
The scientists slipped materials to him through a trapdoor.
“Again.”
A scrap sheet from a decommissioned warplane turned into a ball, crumpling as easily as paper.
“Again.”
A metal tube compressed and twisted until it became a thin silk thread. He tied it into three knots.
“Again.”
They placed a butterfly in front of him, slid in on a petri dish with some gutters along the sides, no lid. The boy paused. Its wings were a dusty powder blue, reminding him of the sky above their chain-link fence borders. It fluttered weakly, not possessing enough strength to fly. He raised his hand, thumb and forefinger separated by a miniscule gap, about to make contact.
The boy put his hand back down.
“Sir, it's alive.”
“It is experimentation material.” The scientist behind the observation glass said cooly, his metallic voice transmitting through the installed speaker.
