Watson loses his money betting on the horses and can’t make rent. He’s offered an opportunity to earn just enough to avoid him having to confess to Holmes that he’s unreliable. He almost gets away with it, too. But when Holmes works out what happened that day, it leads to a consequence that both hoped for but neither thought would happen.
“What on Earth do you want with me?” I asked, meeting the proprietor’s open smile with more than a little suspicion.
“Let me show you,” the man said, indicating a door at the back of the showroom. This is it, I thought, imagining some of the ways a few of my old comrades in arms had earned a few extra shillings. This is where you die of shame.
