Summary
Laurent was kneeling on the floor before the fire, playing with an intricately painted wooden toy knight. Their uncle sat behind him in a tall-backed chair, reading out loud from a book while idly stroking Laurent’s hair. Laurent was only in a white shirt, the fabric so fine as to be nearly translucent, unlaced at the neck. The firelight was playing over his delicate ivory skin where the neck of the shirt gaped open, laces trailing down haphazardly.
The crackling of the fire, the casual undress, uncle’s hypnotic voice, his fingers tangled in Laurent’s golden hair. It made Auguste’s skin crawl.

Summary
Finally they reached Ios and Damen himself greeted them at the castle gates, walking forward to clasp Auguste’s arm.
“Brother!” he said with a happy smile.
“Brother,” Auguste answered with a more sedate nod.
“I apologize for not meeting you at the border myself,” Damen said. “There were some matters I had to attend to. I trust you enjoyed the journey?”
“Your land and your people have been most hospitable,” Auguste agreed. “I believe you’ve met my brother, Prince Laurent?”
He stepped aside so Laurent was no longer half-hidden behind him and watched Damen’s expression change, his eyes widening and lips parting. It was obvious he was blushing even despite his dark complexion.
“You look like a landed fish, brother,” Auguste murmured, pitching his voice low so only Damen could hear.

Summary
“I have a plan,” Uncle said. “I have a plan for you to revenge Auguste and kill Damianos. I intend to offer the Akielons a gift, to seal our truce. Three Veretian pets, to train as slaves for the prince. Three pets of the highest quality.”
“Three pets?” Laurent asked slowly, not following.
“Yes,” Uncle said. “Ancel, Nicaise, and you, my sweet.”

Summary
Akielos and Vere are on the eve of going to war, but they make one last attempt to come to terms during a diplomatic summit at Marlas.
The two Kings are itching for a fight, but the Princes have other ideas. Laurent comes up with a plan that will bring their fathers together and avert war for good.
Damen startled, turning to look behind him at the open doors that led to the balcony. And then he startled harder when he saw Laurent with his arms folded neatly on the balustrade and his head cocked inquisitively.
“Quick,” Laurent said. “Put these on.” He tossed over a bundle of cloth and Damen caught it, dumbstruck.
“What is this?”
“What does it look like?” Laurent asked, petulantly rolling his eyes. “This is a kidnapping.”
“A- a kidnapping?” Damen asked.
“In the morning, our fathers will find that their sons have been tragically kidnapped by enemies unknown,” Laurent said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “They’ll have to work together to find us. By the time we return after triumphantly escaping our captors they’ll be fast friends and war will be avoided.”

Summary
Winters in Varenne were truly awful- cold and dark and worst of all- boring.
The only thing that made any of it even remotely bearable was that fact that Berenger, who rose with the sun, could be convinced to lay about in bed awhile during the darker months. And then, of course, he’d rise and dress in a boring brown jacket and go about his boring duties. The fact that Ancel often joined him meant nothing more than how painfully boring everything else was. There was nothing much to do but read, and even though Ancel could read with ease now, after a year’s worth of lessons, that didn’t mean he particularly enjoyed it.

Summary
The first time Ancel found a gray hair he nearly screamed. Except Berenger was asleep in the other room so he took a careful breath instead. He plucked the hair and burned it over the flame of the lamp standing on his dressing table, going back to combing his hair with slow even motions until it shone.
If he spent extra time that night inspecting the rest of his locks for other traitorous signs of gray, then no one was around to see, or mention it.

Summary
“I have an heir,” Berenger said. “My sister’s second son stands to inherit Varenne. You might remember the boy that was here last winter? Alfonse?”
Ancel frowned, staring up at him silently.
“You spent the first week glaring at him,” Berenger said softly. “And then you taught him to help you cheat at cards and spent the rest of the winter running around together and making trouble for poor Parsins.”
“That was- your nephew?” Ancel sputtered. “I thought he was some- unfortunate orphan.”

Summary
Eight months into chasing the jewel thief and forger they’d nicknamed Ruby, Berenger had finally managed to track him down not only to his hotel, but to his hotel room.
Berenger’s team of nearly two dozen plainclothes police officers staked out the place and settled in to wait, Berenger himself sitting at the hotel bar where he had a good view of the front desk, nursing a single glass of whiskey while he held his phone in a tight grip, monitoring the situation while his heart pounded with excitement.
The excitement faded as the hours dragged on towards midnight, then past it. By one in the morning they’d still had no sign of Ruby, or anyone even stepping remotely near his room.
Now with a sequel: Catch and Release

Summary
In retrospect Ancel couldn’t remember what it was that had sent him to storming out of the stables in a rage, still holding his riding crop in a tight grip.
“Berenger-” he spit out, striding into their bedroom.
Berenger looked up from a letter he’d been working on at his desk and abruptly dropped his quill, his mouth falling open.

Summary
“Boy. Saddle my horse.”
Berenger scowled. Just because he didn’t drape himself in brocades and velvets didn’t mean he was a servant. He wasn’t less than just because he wasn’t some painted dandy.
“Saddle it yourself,” he snarled, turning.
There was a youth standing a short distance away, his hair shining as bright as gold and his eyes as blue and clear as sapphires. Berenger’s mouth went dry as he stared at the vision before him. The boy was about his own age or maybe a year younger. He was the most beautiful thing Berenger had ever seen.
He held himself with noble bearing, straight backed and wide-shouldered. Everything about him was perfect- from the inquisitive tilt of his head to his easy stance, his long limbs, his lean torso. Berenger couldn’t help running his stunned gaze down the young man’s body. He was wearing simple riding leathers and a rich blue cloak, fastened at the shoulder with a gold starburst pin.
Berenger’s knees gave out and it was easier to kneel than to try and recover. His heart was racing as he tilted his head down to stare at a bit of straw on the ground, swallowing heavily.

Summary
There were clothes set out for Berenger on the bed, fine silks and velvets like a pet might wear. He put them on, his skin so hot he thought he might catch fire. There was jewelry, too. Not jewelry he'd gifted to Ancel- jewelry that he must have had commissioned specially, just for this- or a moment like this. A moment when he wanted Berenger to play his pet.

“It’s dangerous for you to stay with me,” Berenger had said.
“I’ve done more for less,” Ancel had countered with a victorious glint in his eyes.
So Berenger hadn’t ended their contract, despite all his misgivings. He hadn’t ended it, because he was selfish and stupid and scared.
He liked Ancel and he didn’t want to be alone.
