Summary
Lightning's dad calls for the first time since he crashed into Radiator Springs. Doc Hudson has some thoughts, but he keeps them to himself, for the most part. Lightning just needs his support, right now.
---
“Doc. We need to leave.”
Doc raised a brow from his spot on the couch, looking up from his newspaper. “Like to the airport or to a remote location.”
“Surprise me.”
He chuckled, putting the newspaper down. “It won’t be so bad. He’s your father.”
“You say that and yet I really don’t think you get it.”
“Tell me about it on the drive.”Series

Summary
Lightning McQueen was a very good loser. It wasn’t often that those skills had to be used, but on this glorious day, he was going to be the best loser.
Lightning could barely see the bright purple, Octain Gain car through the smoke of burnout. It suffocated his lungs and made him cough, but he didn’t give a shit. He scrambled out of the #95’s window and nearly fell flat on his face in the process.
And there he was.
Bobby fucking Swift.
Bobby was yelling at the top of his lungs, dancing on top of his #19. He whooped and cheered through the smoke as reporters surrounded him like seagulls to fries.
Lightning was going to kiss that man.
Sally would get it.
---
Bobby Swift wins the Piston Cup, which comes with a party, a speech, and the end of a racing season. Cal Weathers loses the Piston Cup, but Lightning and Bobby can't tell if that's why he's been acting so weird or not. One thing's clear, though. Something's up with Dinoco.

Summary
“Oh my god, wait, pull over!” Lightning called out, his eyes going wide at the road sign. Doc pursed his lips, but obeyed.
Lightning opened the door and raced out, barely checking for any oncoming traffic.
He was looking at the best sign that had ever been made.
Thomasville Speedway. Home of the Fabulous Hudson Hornet.
Lightning laughed out loud, turning back around to Doc who approached with his hands in his pockets.
“Doc! It’s you!”
“I can see that.”° ° °
Doc and Lightning are on their way back home from the Weathers' place, which as Lightning recalls, is a short drive over to Doc's hometown. When he suggests driving over, he didn't realize how cagey Doc would be.

Summary
“Lightning, I’m having a sexuality crisis.”
“Aren’t we all?” Lightning sighed dramatically, picking up the discarded Mario Kart remote. “I’m taking Waluigi this time.”
Bobby burst out into laughter.
“No. Lightning.” Cal stared him down. Lightning met his gaze, starting to look confused. “I am having a sexuality crisis.”
“What.” It took a few seconds to process. Those few seconds had Cal nearly panicking again. “Wait, what?!”---
Cal Weathers figures some things out about himself. Lightning and Bobby are right there for him with Mario Kart, stupid jokes, and endless love.

“I’m not arguing with you. You’re racing with a crew chief.”
“I already have one, Doc! It’s you!”
“Well, now you have another.”
“No! I don’t want another.”° ° °

Summary
Bobby wrecks Lightning with five laps to go. Lightning just wants to chat about it.
。 。 。
“Crashin’ is a part of racing, playing with the rules is a part of the game, but you care about your friendships. Those are what bring this sport life for you. That ain’t worth nothing. That being said,” Doc leaned in, placing a hand on Lightning’s shoulder. “That move deserves a swing,” Doc muttered under his breath. “And if he’s any friend worth his weight, he’ll take it like a gentleman.”
