It was only supposed to be for a few minutes. The pathologist was supposed to come right back. He was supposed to let John out.

A Caramico-tinged reimagining of 4x09 "Obstruction of Justice"
Anna takes care of John after he gets tasered by a volatile police officer while trying to protect his patient's rights, sustaining a head injury in the process.
John blinks up at her dazedly, eyes swinging around before settling on her. “Anna?”
She smiles grimly. “I’m here, Carter.”
John blinks rapidly. “Ow.”
Anna sighs, giving his hand a squeeze. “I know.”

Summary
Peter wants to hit something. Wants to shake John until he wakes up, until he snaps out of it.
“What can you do?” he asks finally, hating the desperation that leaks into his voice.
He takes a seat as Deraad begins to talk about treatment options. He lets his gaze settle on Carter, on the stubble that’s shadowing his jaw. The cannula that delivers oxygen to his brain. His colorless cheeks. His vacant expression. It hurts. It physically hurts Peter to see him like this.
Come back, he wills his former student silently. Wherever you are… please come back.
Because wherever John Carter is… it’s not here.

Summary
The story of how John Carter ended up in soft restraints in the neurology step-down unit at County General Hospital is, if you ask him, the story of a gross overreaction on the part of his teacher, Peter Benton.
If you ask Benton… the restraints were a completely necessary medical intervention made on behalf of a severely concussed and extremely dizzy idiot.
OR: After getting attacked in the ER, Carter has a severe concussion and refuses to stay in bed.

But before the two can work out their differences, they are ambushed by a trio of violent drug-seekers, looking to score from the ambulance's stash.

Peter gets the call on a Thursday in late July, mid-shift. He’s on the next flight out of Chicago.
“Is this Doctor Peter Benton?”
“Speaking.”
“Hello, Doctor Benton. I’m calling from the Frederickson Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta. I have you listed as the emergency contact for John Carter?”
“What’s happened.”
“I’m afraid that a few hours ago, Doctor Carter was admitted to the hospital with some very serious injuries.”
“What kind of injuries, exactly?”
“Doctor Benton, he was bleeding significantly from his left arm and wrist. It appears… Well, it appears he made an attempt on his own life.”
Everything after that is a blur.

Summary
A fuck-up at work triggers bad memories and bad habits for John Carter. In the midst of a record heat wave, Carter goes for a punishing run on his family's property, with terrible consequences. Peter Benton to the rescue.
He puts his fingers to Carter’s neck, and is horribly unsurprised at the weak, thready, and extremely rapid pulse he feels beneath the skin. Tachycardic. Very tachycardic.
A hand on John’s forehead is all but confirmation of Peter’s fears. His face is blazing hot, more like touching a furnace than human skin.
Heat stroke.

He couldn’t stomach the thought of the kid being alone, not even for a second. Not after everything that had happened. Summary
Set in S3. John Carter is hospitalized with a bad case of pneumonia. Eleanor Carter arrives at County General to sit at his bedside. Her visit, however, is motivated not by love for her ailing son, but by something far more selfish. Peter Benton comes to realize that his student's family life is not just complicated, but in fact deeply troubling.
Eleanor Carter didn’t ask questions about how John was doing, about his prognosis, while Peter walked her to John’s room. She doesn’t reach out to him now, doesn’t hold his hand or comb his sweat-slick hair from his feverish forehead. She doesn’t soothe him with comforting, loving words.
She just… sits there. Expression wooden and disinterested. And her eyes keep looking at the door.
