His mother’s tone is the rubber band snap of a corporate manager closing a deal, and she barely throws him a glance as she adjusts the brooch on her cardigan, eyes glued instead to her own reflection. John half leans against the doorway, so many years of being forbidden from entering his parents’ room keeping him glued to the threshold.
“Are you ready for this evening?”
A gala. A real, extravagant gala with gallons of expensive alcohol that John can't drink with his meds, and hundreds of interrogative faces that scrunch in pity whenever he catches them staring.

A week after John's released from the hospital, his parents throw a ball.

He rushes to Carter’s side, and after haphazardly kicking away some glass shards, kneels down on one knee.
The stench of Scotch assaults his nostrils immediately. The sleeves and shoulders of Carter’s suit jacket are soaked in it.
Peter reaches out to rest a hand on Carter’s shoulder. The man on the floor flinches back so hard that Peter loses his balance and has to catch himself with one hand.

“Shift going okay?” Carter asks as he goes to open his locker.
“Yeah, been pretty quiet actually,” Anna leans against the locker wall, arms crossed, studying him; he does look tired, and his nose is a little red. “Feel okay?”
Carter sniffs and clears his throat. “Yeah, yeah. Just some upper respiratory thing, more annoying than anything.”
“Take anything for it?”
Carter scoffs a laugh, “I’m okay, Anna.”
Anna rolls her eyes. Classic man behavior, she thinks, refusing any and all supportive measures unless near death. He appears to be his usual self though, maybe a little grumpy, so she’s not worried and doesn’t push it.
