Gabriel continues to munch on his popcorn.Dean’s eyes go straight to the shadow of Sam’s wings. He blinks and looks warily at the other three. “Sam?” he asks, “Next time you want to invite the halo patrol for an orgy, please tell me.”
The lights are still flickering, and Lucifer’s wings are still visible, shadows spreading across the back of the room as a threat. Hearing Dean though the shadow fades but it’s too late. The damage is done.
“Sure Dean,” Sam says weakly. “Except they’re not invited...” How did Dean know Gabriel was an angel anyway?

Sam awaits his fate silently.What he doesn’t expect is for Dean to reach for the air next to Sam and run his hands through it.
Zachariah and Raphael stop smiling at seeing Dean start to groom Lucifer’s wings. Gabriel snickers into a chocolate bar.
Sam shudders, feeling Dean’s fingers touch his wings. “What… what are you doing?” he asks, frowning as Dean continues to run his fingers through his wings.
“I can’t believe you let them get like this,” Dean snaps at him, “Did you just sit there and let them get covered in ash and…” he sniffs them. Actually sniffs them. “Sulphur,” he wrinkles his nose. “And you didn’t even bother to clean them?”

Dean’s grooming his wings. Raphael and Zachariah seem as shocked as Lucifer is. Gabriel’s lips however are curling up into a grin as if he’s just worked something out.Almost as soon as he does the grin drops off his face to be replaced by pure terror. “Oh crap,” he mutters.

Gabriel still looks terrified but he isn’t going anywhere. That is the moment that Castiel pops in with a flutter of wings. He takes one look at the scene and then turns to Dean.“I found Pestilence.” He tells Dean, as if he is reporting back to his general. “I managed to negotiate a deal which involves him foregoing the Apocalypse. He’s now trying to invent ways to cure some of his diseases so he can start over fresh by the time the next Apocalypse rolls over. He doesn’t seem to realise it’s scheduled for a few billion years yet.”
What?

“Oh you know,” Dean shrugs, “The usual. Say ‘yes’ to Michael. Your brother is the devil. Save the world. It’s getting a bit tedious.”Castiel doesn’t seem surprised by any of that information. “Have you told them?” he asks, observing Gabriel’s terrified face.
Dean looks at the four other angels. “I think Gabriel has guessed,” he admits. “Would it make him feel better if I told him I don’t hate him too much for Mystery Spot?”
Gabriel visible relaxes.
“Probably,” Cass says.

“And where…” Dean smirks, “Exactly is Michael?”That question stumps Zachariah and Raphael still looks confused. It seems to be his permanent expression.
Lucifer frowns, trying to see what Dean’s getting at. Cass looks relaxed, after having reported in to Dean, as if he did it regularly.
As if he was reporting back to his general.
Maybe he was reporting back to his general.
Sam looks back at Dean, staring hard. If he squints really hard he can just make out the flicker of bronze gold wings before they vanish. They’re so well hidden if he hadn’t been looking he would never have spotted them.
“Michael?”
“Yeah?” Dean stops cleaning his wings, looking up. He blinks, taking in the note of name. “That is my name last time I checked. At least… one of them…”
Zachariah looks sick. Gabriel looks torn between laughing his head off and being terrified. No wonder. His though process must have been something like – Michael you crafty bastard what have you been doing? Never thought you’d have the guts to go human. And Dean Winchester of all people? Braved hell did you? For Lucifer of course it would never be anything less… I knew I liked you with the slow dancing aliens… and then that time in Broward oh crap I killed him again and again and he’s going to kill me I’m going to die. What inspired me to kill him on a Tuesday of all days and thank dad Lucifer hasn’t realised that yet or else I’m doomed for the next hundred years.
Gabriel did have it coming for him. He’d spent a hundred Tuesdays killing Dean in various horrible ways after all.

Sam is still trying to get over the fact that Michael went to hell for him. That Michael willingly tortured in hell to get him free.Gabriel seems to have gotten over his fear and has collapsed into laughter. “You stabbed me knowing full well I wasn’t a Trickster. And say what you like but you let me kill you again and again!”
Michael rolls his eyes. Raphael looks confused. Zachariah is terrified. Castiel is amused. Gabriel is in hysterics.

Not What You Expected by EclipseWing-
Dean is still rage and fury and fire, glaring at the hunters like he's considering how best to punish them. Michael is Judgement after all, although he really shares that role with Gabriel. He's law and justice and the archangel of warriors everywhere.He's also terrifying. Roy looks like he's about to puke or wet himself. He might have already, but Sam doesn't really want to pay that much attention.
"I don't think shotgun pellets are gonna’ cut it," Dean drawls, words casual but his voice like thunder in the air, "Gonna’ need something with a bit more power than that."
For a second he looks like he's going to roast the guy right there. Burn him up - Michael always did have a thing for fire - or maybe sending him exploding into several gory pieces. But then with a sigh Dean steps back, hand dropping. With a crash Roy tumbles to the floor. Walt turns his shotgun to Dean, who just looks at him.
Walt sizes up Sam with his gun pointed at his head and Dean whose eyes are still angel-lit, even if the wing shadows have gone and then does the sensible thing.
He drops the shotgun, hands flying into the air.
"Good boy," Dean taunts, eyes finally fading back to green, "Now which one do I kill, and which one do I leave alive to pass on the word that we're..." he pauses, searching for a word.
"Not hunt-able," Sam says, "Also, there's no Apocalypse. Just sayin', the Horsemen aren't riding, Gabriel's not blowing the trumpet..."
"I think he lost it," Dean shrugs, "Well, he claims to have lost it, but he said he lost his sword too and I found it in the bottom of some pond in England."
Sam narrows his eyes because 'bottom of some pond' sounds familiar but he can't remember why. Oh well. "Let them go," he shrugs, "Not worth it."
"Not worth it?" Dean sounds aghast, "Lucy Luke brother, they tried to hurt you. Nobody's allowed to hurt you but me."
There were issues with that, but honestly Sam doesn't mind. That probably speaks volumes to how messed up they are. There's too much Dean and Sam mixed into the Michael and Lucifer. It's ridiculous. Their time as mortals was nothing more than a grain of sand in a desert as to how old they are, but it changed everything.
Michael and Lucifer are.
They exist.
Nothing more. Nothing less.
Dean and Sam are human and flawed and broken and they've torn themselves down and back up again until Sam is pretty sure they've practically reinvented co-dependency.

"They're not worth it," Sam shrugs, "I'm fine, you're fine, my shirt on the other hand is not fine...""Your shirt's fine," Dean rolls his eyes, and with a hand wave it is stitched back together. "Hang on," Dean pauses, taking in the shirt he just fixed, “Is that the awful one that looks white but is actually pink and flowery"
He looks like he's considering tearing it up again and Sam steps away from his brother, tugging at the fabric, "It's not the same," he mumbles, "It smells all..." he pauses, sniffing at the fabric, ignoring Dean's "Dude!". "It smells all grace-y," he says. “And the weave is all wrong.”
"How can things smell like Grace?" Dean asks, oblivious to the two hunters still standing there shivering.
"It just does, okay?" Sam glares at Walt who quails under his glare. Rightly so. He liked this shirt.
"I'm going to let them live just on principle for ruining that god-awful shirt," Dean mumbles, stepping back. With a sigh he waves a hand, "Shoo," he says, "We see another hunter trying to kill us or maim us or set up some sort of twisted trap I'm going to rip them out of existence. Got it?"
Two mute, shaky nods.
"Well?" Dean huffs, "What are you waiting for? Skedaddle."
It is quite something, Sam muses, watching Michael, general of the heavenly host, tell two terrified hunters to 'skedaddle', and then watching as they proceed to do so, tripping over each other and nearly falling over twice in their haste to get out. They also leave their shotguns where they had dropped them.
Sam scoops them up, "Cool," he says, "New shotguns. Salt is hell on the barrel."

"Okay," Bobby says again with a shrug, "Do you have angelic duties to attend to or do you have time for a hunt I thought you might like."Sam seems to be just as disbelieving as Dean, "You believe us?" he asks, "And… you're okay with this?"
"Well if it's a joke it's not funny," Bobby narrows his eyes.
"It's not a joke, I swear," Sam splutters, "I mean… I'm the Devil, how can you be okay with that? I'm barely okay with that..."
"Sam," Dean hisses, because this was not their plan, "We were going to ease him in gently."
"But I'm the Devil, Dean," Sam turns pleading eyes on him, "I'm evil incarnate. I don't want to be evil incarnate… I barely did anything. So I corrupted a few souls, burned a few cities… I've been in time out for over a millennium, I've learned my lesson…"
Sam's still making puppy-dog eyes. Dean doesn't know what to do, "It's okay," he says, trying to be reassuring but it falls flat, "You're not going to end the world, that's the important thing…" he turns back to Bobby, ready to fly Sam and him out of there if he starts shooting. But Bobby just seems slightly puzzled over everything.
"I don't get it," Bobby frowns, looking first from Sam to Dean and then back.
Sam shifts next to him and Dean tries to think of another way to explain. Sam had wanted to do this gently but Dean's not good at subtle, "I'm Michael," he says, "And Sam's Lucifer."
"Dean," Sam hisses, swatting at him and Dean steps out of reach.
Bobby is still staring.
"I'm not deaf," he says, slowly, "I heard you the first time. But I don't get it. How come Sam's the Devil?"
Dean's mind stutters and then backtracks, "Uh… sorry, come again?"
"I mean, you're the kid who managed to blow up my shed when I left him alone for ten minutes. Sam on the other hand…"
Sam preens. He fucking preens, chest puffing out slightly and wings tilting with smugness. They're still slightly dove-grey with ash instead of the white they should be and Dean eyes them vindictively. He's got some cleaner for his car, he might crack it out just for this occasion.
Dean turns back to Bobby, "So what, Sam's an angel, fine, that makes sense but I can't be?"
Bobby gives him the stink eye, "Oh, I never said that. But you were probably the worst angel up there blaspheming and chasing tail and--"
Dean chokes a little. Sam's laughing the little bastard. Dean hits him with a wing and it's really satisfying to see his too-tall brother flail for balance.
"You're the worst sort of angel I've ever heard of," Bobby finishes, with a shrug.
"Ah," Dean manages to plaster on a wide, shit-eating grin, "But you have heard of me."
His grin falls flat when Bobby just raises one eyebrow, "Point proven," he says, and turns away.
"B-but I'm Michael!" Dean says. He's not whining dammit.
"So does that mean you have a flaming sword?" Bobby shouts back to him, "Good, I've got a demon problem in Nebraska for you to take on, oh Saint Michael the Archangel…"
"Is he mocking me?" Dean's a bit confused, glancing at Sam, "Is he mocking me?"
Sam still looks like he's trying not to laugh. Dean glares at him and strides away from his irritating little brother. He should have left him in time-out. He's going to go find Castiel, at least Cas respects him.
-Oh my gosh I forgot, this is the fic! With Dean burning down a house and Sam being like I was only gone for a minute! I was thinking about it recently, trying to remember if it was actually canon or just a fic, and now thanks to my mood striking some MichaelDean vibes I came across the exact fic I was thinking of!

The ghost burns. So does everything around it.So he might be a bit out of practise. Dean doesn't want to hang around. He scrambles up and legs it for the front door, wings folding and sliding back into the ether.
The door slams behind him and he makes it two steps before the whole house shudders weakly. It's old, and it doesn't take long before cindering embers send the mainframe caving inwards in a cloud of dust.
There are hurried footsteps that skid to a stop. Sam stands there holding the shotgun, and he's frozen staring at the burning building behind Dean.
"Dean…" Sam stops.
Sam stares.
Dean clears his throat.
Sam stares some more, "I was gone a minute," he says, too surprised to even put inflection into his words, "A minute," he repeats.
"I know," Dean says, "You missed all the excitement."
"What did you do?"
Dean bristles, "What makes you think I did something? Why is when something goes wrong it's always my fault?"
Behind him with a creak part of the house collapses into the basement. Dean tries not to wince.

The door opens to the Cage to release Lucifer, except there's nothing in there. Only confetti and a trickster who's not really a trickster and has a hell of a story to tell. One that involves the love of a big brother willing to do anything to protect his little brother and keep him safe. Even if that means tearing him from his Grace and making him human in order to free him from Hell.
Even if that means tearing his own Grace out to become human with him.
With new memories pouring in fast, Dean and Sam are in a race to figure out who really flipped the switch on the apocalypse and how to stop it, pretending they're vessels when they're really just missing their Graces, and, oh yeah, trying to find their brotherhood that they both had a hand in ripping apart.
That last one might not be the easiest, but it could mean the difference for who they are now, and who they used to be.

But then Castiel gets involved and between Cain's bees, references to a certain female demon, and moving further and further east from Sam and Dean, Gabriel's just not sure how much an archangel can take.

Summary
A oneshot-duo companion to larger fic To Be Angelic, wherein Dean Winchester finds out that he was born a species of angel and manifests his grace.
These two pieces mostly focus on the nuances of Dean's support system as they tread the waters of what it means that Dean is now an angel, in terms of the differences between being a human, and being a celestial made of angelic grace. So lots of angel things and descriptive writing! Wooo!
The first chapter of this takes place immediately on the heels of To Be Angelic chapter six, and the second chapter takes place during the few days that pass at the beginning of To Be Angelic chapter twenty-eight.

In the wake of Lilith's death and the apparent destruction of their brotherhood, Dean and Sam find there's an even bigger revelation than Lucifer rising, because Lucifer isn't in his Cage. Lucifer and Michael both Fell a long time ago and became someone new. Became human.
With Heaven and Hell gunning for them, and new/old brothers fighting beside them, Dean and Sam have to navigate the world as the archangels they used to be and the brothers they're desperately trying to be again. Their bonds of brotherhood aren't easily torn apart, though, and something their enemies would be wise to realize.
