To avoid becoming Michael's replacment, Gabriel flees into another universe. Unfortunately he takes Dean, Sam and Cas with him. They get separated and the only way back home for Dean, Sam and Cas is to team up with other versions of themself to find Gabriel (and his counterpart) so he can bring them home.

If there’s one thing he wished he could change, one thing he’d hoped was a dream, it would be that night several months ago; when he felt that rusted piece of rebar puncture his skin. Just as the world was growing dark, and he was sure Sam had heeded his dying pleas and left him to die alone, to die a hunter, the world was filled with the red and blue’s of rescue. Rather than letting Dean die as he always swore he would, Sam had betrayed him and called for help.
The rebar, which was meant to end his life, had done its job. Sam just prohibited it from finishing what it started. It severed his spinal cord; left him paralyzed from the waist down and everything Dean was, everything Dean knew before, was useless now. If he could change anything, it would be that phone call.
He didn’t want to live.
