(Not to mention an *AFFAIR child*, which didn't help matters in the least...) Will Stacks??? Fairly normal- just nearly as lonely and alone as 'the Wicked Witch of the West'. They're not exactly what you would call 'friends' much less *'besties'* like Elphaba and Boq Ethan Woodsman... but they're *friend-LY* enough with each other.
And then, one day, a hard-knock life becomes much easier and a rainbow appears in the sky as well as the Wishing Star... Oliver Warbucks is a very rich, very respected man. The thing that was driving the press absolutely crazy, was his complete lack of any romantic connections. If you asked his newly acquired "friend", President Roosevelt, he would say that Oliver was a hard-headed man of business, and that he didn't have time for such frivolities as romance. If you asked Grace Farrell, his secretary, she would blush and mumble some answer about him being married to his work. If you asked his mother you probably wouldn't get an answer because you would be talking to a grave, but if you could communicate with her, the answer would likely be that he wasn't really capable of love, too unfeeling.
